My desktop is an i7 4790 @ 3.6ghz, 16GB DDR3, and a GTX-770 on an MSI Z97 SLI+ motherboard. I am wanting to upgrade to a GTX-970. One is PCIE 3.0, One is PCIE 3.0 x16. Not sure what the x16 means. My question is, will the GTX-970 work on my MSI Z97 SLI+ motherboard?

Looks like it should work.  From their website:

 https://us.msi.com/M...I/Specification

Slots

• 3 x PCIe 3.0 x16 slot (support x16, x8/x8, x8/x4/x4 modes)

Not sure what the x16 means

that's the number of pcie lanes connected to that slot.

just for info at the moment all pcie graphics card will work in all pcie motherboards, just you may need a bios update if the motherboard pcie version is older than 2.0 for amd/ati cards from my understanding.
