I have an old laptop Toshiba Satellite M60 BK3 (Pentium M processor 1.86Ghz, with Windows 7 Pro pack1)  that recently started  working very slow.

It boots up very slow.It opens up any web-browser very slow. The webpages are loading very slow.

Any program is loading very slow.

I did Windows Update and checked for the viruses, and all seems to be intact.

Any idea what can be done in order to make this laptop work with a normal speed as it used to?

Get Process Explorer

http://live.sysinter...com/procexp.exe
Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7+ - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Copy the next 2 lines:

TASKLIST /SVC  > \junk.txt
notepad \junk.txt

Open an Elevated Command Prompt:
Win 7: Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator
Win 8: http://www.eightforu...indows-8-a.html
win 10: http://www.howtogeek...-in-windows-10/

Right click and Paste (or Edit then Paste) and the copied lines should appear.
Hit Enter if notepad does not open.  Copy and paste the text from notepad into a reply.

Get the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_speccy/ (Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button  - Do NOT press the large Start Download button on the upper left!)
Download, Save and Install it.  Tell it you do not need CCLEANER.    Run Speccy.  When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving),
File, Save as Text File,  (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK.  Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System.
(It will be near the top,  10-20  lines down.) Save the file.  Attach the file to your next post.  Attaching the log is the best option as it is too big for the forum.  Attaching is a multi step process.

First click on More Reply Options
Then scroll down to where you see
Choose File and click on it.  Point it at the file and hit Open.
Now click on Attach this file.

Right click on (My) Computer and select Manage (Continue) Then click on the arrow in front of Event Viewer. Next Click on the arrow in front of Windows Logs Right click on System and Clear Log, Clear. Repeat for Application.

Reboot.

Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator.  Then type (with an Enter after each line).

sfc  /scannow

(This will check your critical system files. Does this finish without complaint?  IF it says it couldn't fix everything then:

Copy the next two lines:

findstr  /c:"[SR]"  \windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log  >  \junk.txt
notepad \windows\logs\cbs\junk.txt

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator, Continue.  Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied line should appear.
Hit Enter. Copy and paste the text from notepad or if it is too big, just attach the file.)

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Right-click VEW.exe and Run AS Administrator
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.  (Each time you run VEW it overwrites the log so copy the first one to a Reply or rename it before running it a second time.)

Definitely running slow. Normally we expect to see System Idle at the top with
about 90%. Interrupts needs to be under 1.4%.

Usually high interrupts indicates a bad driver.

Try going in to Safe Mode with and without networking and see if Interrupts gets down where it should be:

(Reboot and when you see the maker's logo, hear a beep or it talks about F8, start tapping the F8 key slowly.  Keep tapping until the Safe Mode Menu appears and choose Safe Mode with Networking.  Login with your usual login.)

after running  sfc  /scannow  in Command Prompt the system scan got complete pretty fast without any issues and here what it says:

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

I guess I don't need to run the other 2 commands :
findstr  /c:"[SR]"  \windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log  >\junk.txt
notepad \windows\logs\cbs\junk.txt
Correct?

Looks like a bad driver.

You can download DPC Latency Checker from http://www.thesycon....ncy_check.shtml

and follow their instructions.  Basically you go into device manager and disable any device you can live without temporarily and see if it helps.  I have found that the Process Explorer log also works by showing you if Interrupts drops when you disable a driver.  I would start with the network adapters as they are often poorly written.

in a Safe Mode the System Idle is running about 90% and Interrupts are indeed under 1.4%.

Safe Mode with networking or without?  If without, try it with networking and see if Interrupts is a lot higher.

OK then Network driver is not at fault.  You can go in to msconfig and uncheck everything under Startup and Apply then under Services, Hide Microsoft Services and uncheck everything that remains. OK and reboot then see if Interrupts looks better.  If ti does then one of the items you unchecked is the problem.  Finding it is a bit of trial and error.  I usually recheck about 1/2 of the items, reboot and see if the problem returns.  Then depending on the result either uncheck 1/2 of the ones I just checked or 1/2 of the remaining items.  Keep going until you have just one or two that cause the problem.
