Shall I try the card with a trusted friend maybe, as this friend, is not so much a friend, just someone I say ok to

Hmm, never one to cast aspersions but in this instance I will say that it is most unlikely that the 290x worked in a HP Pavilion 550 Gaming PC, you will have to draw your own conclusions from that I`m afraid.

A good friend who has an adequately powered system or a local tech or tech store, the latter may charge a small fee so best to ask them first.

Maybe I would be better of selling it, and buying another 280,

Wasn`t aware that you had previously had an R9 280 only the R9 290 you mentioned in your OP.

Sorry, there,

Yes, the first new card I bought a few years ago was the R9 280, that worked fine untill it broke, actually it still runs my computer if i put it in, but the graphics breaks up, and it could not run any game, any more.

there is something wrong here, I bought a R9 290, and now that does not work in my system, but the very old card from my other comp. does ??? As I said the comp. seems to start and the card does, but nothing on my scree, but funy as the old R9 290, did work, and might even work now if I put it in, but the screen graphics breaks up, I will try it again later, no time now.

I put my old R9 290 back in, I started to get the start of Windows on the screen, computer was starting up, so thought, ho, at least this card is still working, {but the graphics on the screen broke up last time I put the card in, and it would never run a game} went out or the room whist the computer powered up, but then when I came back a blank screen, felt the top of the card, and it was red hot, so shut the computer back down, all so odd, will try the new R9 290 in a bit, just bit busy doing something on here now.

No, I have not had time sorry. But all 4 cards could not all be not working, as I bought them all of EBay, and they said they were working fine, and sold two back, so they must have worked. GTX 760, R390X, R290X, and no this card I just bought, 290. So odd when the other 290 ran my computer for years.

From your reply #12

My old PS, which ran the R9 290 was a OCZ 650W.

And from my reply #15

That is 100W below what is recommended and using over a period of time may have damaged the GPU.

It is not just the GPU that can get damaged but all of your hardware as it gets deprived of the power it needs by the power hungry GPU.

As an asides Wayne, it is not a good idea to purchase anything used when it comes to computer hardware as you simply don`t know whether it has been looked after or not + there are too many unscrupulous sellers out there.

Is the 850W PSU also a used item.

No, the 850 EVEA, was brand new.

Still odd when that old R290 starts with windows on the screen, but the new, ok second hand cards dont, not even the same R290. Old R290 was a sapphire, and so is the new second hand card, but the old got one fan, this got three fans. The think that you clip down when the card sits in right has broke off, but cant see that making a difference, as all the cards but from the old R290, will not put anything on the screen, but all the cards power up, as you can hear, see lights, and the fans go.

Bingo, I found that little button on the new R9 290, and it worked. Also it ran both games perfect on their highest settings, I dont get why some people say that their games will not play on their highest settings, and need far faster graphic cards, I mean I put Pcars2 in the highest settings, as many cars as I could race with, and all was fantastic, no lag no nothing.

Thank you for your help, in a way we got there in  the end.
