Hi guys

Im new here and not one of the geeks so please bear with me

Issue: no network access for 2 days. I was casually playing an online game and then suddenly lost any connection. (Im using a very old hp pc that is in windows 7-32 bit)
Things I tried to do:
*disable firewall
*update network adapter driver
*turning off and unplugging everything
*unistalling driver and installing it back
*turning off the power saving stuff
(Note: all of these are just stuff i searched through the internet with my phone)

Observations:
*i used the same ethernet cable and tried it in my laptop and got a working internet connection
*wifi is working (note: the pc we are talking about here is a very old model and didnt have a pre-installed wifi adapter so I never really got to utilized any wifi connection with this computer)
*THE WEIRD THING: i can actually get a ethernet green light on in my modem but only when the cpu and monitor are turned off and only the avr is turned on. I'll then have the pc restarted, thinking that the network access is working fine again. I'll then actually get an internet connection but only for an average of 4 mins. (Note: at these times, i can get to google and search for stuff then lose the internet again) The ethernet led light never turns on except when i reperform this scenario of turning off the monitor and cpu.

Please help me save my old buddy
Thank you experts!

(Please let me know if there is anything I can do that will help you understand the problem in more depth)

Hi :welcome:

Lets take a look, I need you to use the working computer to download a file and transfer to the bad one using a flash drive.

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the flash drive.
Insert the flash drive on the problematic computer, close the browser and run MiniToolBox, check the following options:

  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (select Only Problems)

Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply.

Hi,

The log isn't complete because it seems the tool crashed!

Please try to boot Windows in Clean Boot mode https://support.micr...boot-in-windows

then run the tool again with the same options and post the new log

That is strange, Minitoolbox is a simple application that collects some logs and it's the first time I see it crashing!

Check Windows System files integrity

  • open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  • type the following command and press Enter:
    sfc /scannow

Note: This may take some time to finish.

let me know if it doesn't say "No integrity violations found"

Hi,

Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable

  • use the flash drive to transfer the tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio.zip to the bad computer and extract the file to c:\Windows\TEMP the zip will extract to a folder called Tweaking.com - Windows Repair
  • execute the file Repair_Windows.exe from the Tweaking.com - Windows Repair folder, accept the Security warning and the EULA
  • click the button Jump To Repairs
  • click the Open Repairs button to access the following screen:
    WindowsRepair.png
  • click the box All Repairs to uncheck all the box's
  • check only the following box's:
    • 13 - Repair Network
    • 25 - Restore Important Windows Services
    • 26 - Set Windows Services to Default Startup
  • check the box Restart/Shutdown System When Finished > Restart System
  • click the Start Repairs button

After this try to run the SFC scan from post #6 again please.

Thank you for this but it seems that I can't run the application. I followed the steps you posted but didnt see any Repair_Windows.exe file in the location where I extracted it into. Although, I can see the file in winRaR, so, I tried extracting the Repair_Windows.exe directly from there but didnt work. I tried downloading the installer instead of the portable file but just got a message that some unknown error occurred while accessing repair_windows.exe. I also tried following the same steps on my other computer, and was able to run the application just fine. Not sure of what went wrong. sorry  :upset:

Good.

» Check the Disk for Errors

  • open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  • type the command:
    chkdsk /r /x C:
Note: When it ask if you want to checked the volume next time the system restarts answer Yes
  • Restart the Computer and let the check run during boot. The scan can take some time depending on the HDD size, the speed of the computer and problems found...
