Hi,

I have a HP ENVY 20 Touchsmart All-In-One, and I've replaced the hard drive with a brand new one. The old drive was running Win 8.1, but I want to put  Win 7 on the new one. The CD/DVD drive on the machine doesn't work, so I've been using an external USB CD/DVD drive. Questions:

  • Can I run Win 7 on this machine?
  • Can I install Win 7 using the external CD/DVD drive?
  • Since it's a brand new HD, what do I need to do to prepare the drive? Format? Partition? If yes, how?

I've replaced hard drives before on older PC's, like, 20 years ago, so I'm a little rusty. A 'step-by-step' would be awesome, but I appreciate any help offered.

Thank you in advance,

Sabrina

You have to go into the BIOS Setup and  turn off Secure Boot and make sure it is able to boot from MBR/Legacy instead of UEFI.

See:

Also set the boot order to pick the correct device as the first option.
