Before I went ahead and bought any kind of hardware that might not end up working, I just wanted to make sure it's as straightforward as it seems to be to me.

 

So we had a new house built and I guess part of that was pre-installing ethernet cables to all rooms that have coaxial cables (our city moved to fiber optic services a few years ago) with the place they meet being in the mechanical room. Super convenient for the internet and television provider to install a modem/wireless router and run services out of, but it's a mechanical room in the basement and so the signal kind of sucks most other places in the house. They put a range extender in the living room which is pretty good, but the wireless signal isn't 100% reliable and tends to really effect the ps4 (especially when you get a few people streaming video on mobile devices). The range extender has two ethernet ports on it, so the cable that comes from the wall plugs into the range extender which runs another cable out to the cable box for the television. 

 

What I'm hoping I'll be able to do is run the cable from the wall into a basic ethernet router/hub, then run cables out of that to the range extender, cable box, my pc, and the ps4. Is it this easy? Are the problems that might occur that I'm not aware of?

Should work but get a Dual-band wireless router with 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports (and a 5th port that goes to the Internet) then you can get rid of the Extender (or use it somewhere else in the house.  Price difference should be minimal.  Walmart has one that would work for $49.99: NETGEAR N750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router, Premium Edition (WNDR4300)  Connect the 5th port  (Labeled WAN and a different color from the other 4) on my router)  to the one that goes into the wall.  You will need to login to the new router from your PC and set the wireless password and it's a good idea to also change the login password to something besides the default.  (I also like to change the SSIDs to make them easier to find and tell apart.)  Then any wireless devices will need to be told about the new router.
