Hi evryone, i am using an Acer Aspire 5551-A laptop with windows 7 home version.

a few days ago, computor would not start...,, entered into that start up loop, and after many tries at using windows repair, nothing worked.

In desparation I tried using system restore, but would still not fire up.......DOH!  then in my wisdom opted for using system image restore from off a different plug in hard drive.

Not realising the image restore disc I had made was from 2014 (where does the time go?)

The computor fired up and apart from a few tweaks seems to be running fine.....BUT!  all my work i have done since 2014 in word are missing ##//?? mutter!

Please tell me I can recover the lost files.

I am a senior senior citizen who has a dangerous smattering of computor kowledge, so any help would be appreciated.

Hi Tommy Gunn and welcome to our forum

:welcome:

Sorry to hear of the problem you have experienced.

It's great to have a disc image ( as you have found) but you still need a good back up of your work( data files)

If your back ups dont work ( or heavens forbid you never made them) then it could be difficult.

Do you have a more recent disc image?? ( one that includes all your recent work? if so it may get you out of trouble.

If you dont then it may be worth while trying some data recovery software

https://www.easeus.c...d-docx-file.htm.

See if it helps

Recuva also has a good reputation..available from here:
https://www.ccleaner...recuva/download

These are both free apps and may well be worth trying

Good luck

Big thanks for that Paws I will try them.....sadly I don't seem to have a more recent system disc image.

I will certainly learn from this stupid mistake.

Well downloaded recuva and it certainly did its job,

But when I restore the file, a widow appears saying,

Word cannot be opened because there are problems with the content, and a further window appears saying file is corrupt and cannot be opened. ##//?? mutter.

So is this the end of the line, or is there anythig further that I can do?

Ok

have you tried opening MS Word, then going to File> Open, select the recovered file and then select Open and Repair?

No good, same window appears saying cannot open because of problems with content?

whilst perusing the recovered files I spotted a word doc that i recognised and clicked restore.... went to file it recovered to and it opened no problem.

i noticed that of all the many files recovered all have what i can only describe as traffic light colours next to them..

If red is this the first indication that this file is corrupt?

I'm not sure to be honest, but sometimes its worthwhile just trying to rename the file that won't open properly..... try a .txt file suffix ie rename recoveredword.docx to recoveredword.txt and see if this will open. you could also try using the suffix .rtf ie recovered word.rtf also try using the suffix .doc you never know one of these may do the trick for you!

Its also possible (sometimes to use winzip to open them, its worth a try!

could i ask what is and where would I find winzip?

Just a thought, I am running firfox, could this be interfering with the file in anyway?

winzip from here:

http://www.winzip.co...ASAAEgLV_vD_BwE

If you rename the .docx file to a .zip file suffix you may be able to extract image files etc that were contained within the Word document.

Firefox ( a webbrowser) should have no effect on Word documents...

Have you tried the other data recovery software from Easeus?
