are you saying that I have to install a new mobo BIOS before I install Windows?  If I do, I can't get it.  l'm on a Notepad with no way to get it onto a thumb drive.  When I installed XP, it installed and then I updated my drivers. Am I stuck?

We talked about this back on September 20:

http://www.geekstogo...dpost&p=2628086

See if changing the first SATA option in the above picture to AHCI or the second option to whatever options it gives you will help.

I changed the first SATA option (SATA RAID/AHCI Mode) from Disabled to AHCI.  I'll try installing Win 10 again and let you know what happens.

When my pc starts up, after changing to AHCI, a message appears that says:

Port 0-5 No device detected (except the CD DVD drive)

I tried connecting to all ports on the motherboard and rebooting after each but Win 10 isn't recognizing that a hdd is connected.

I just changed the second setting.  SATA Port0-3 Native Mode from Disabled to Enabled but Win 10 still doesn't see the hdd.  I tried a new data cable but it didn't help.

I decided to try to install Win 10 on a hdd that's been in my case and used for a while because it had been formatted and made Basic already and Win 10 is installing.  It's wiping out everything I had on it but I have everything backed up on externals.  When Windows starts, I'll install and update my drivers and when I can get on line, I'll let you know.

This is why I wanted you to download Win 10 and test it from a USB.

I've seen where if the drive is prepartitioned with MBR that Win 10 will install on it without GPT.  Also you may be able to boot off of your new 8 drive card tho you would have to load the drivers.  If all else fails you can replace the motherboard.   https://www.newegg.c...N82E16813130855is only $45.  I've got one of them and it works nicely for my AMD CPU.  You probably need something a bit different with your
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40GHz Socket 775 DDR2

Something like ASRock G41C-GS R2.0 LGA 775 Intel G41 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard for $65

I'm now using Windows 10!  WooHoooo!

I couldn't test Windows 10, if you remember.  I unzipped the file and there was no .iso or setup file.

IE and Firefox are working fine.

Windows is working fine without me having to insert the graphics card and adapter card disks.  Should I still install them?

Great.  Glad you got it working.  Probably don't need the drivers but search for

Device Manager

and hit Enter.  then View, Show Hidden Devices.  Now look in the right pane for yellow flagged devices.  Right click on one and select properties then click on the Details tab.  Change Property to Hardware IDs.  Click on the top one then right click and copy.  Paste that into a reply.  Repeat for all yellow flagged devices.

That will tell us if we need drivers for anything.

I use Classic Shell with Windows 10 to make it work like Win 7:

http://www.classicshell.net/

Can't stand the new look and feel.  Nothing is where it should be.

There's no right pane or yellow flagged devices.  I can only check for updated drivers manually for each device and let Windows download and install them.  It'll take time, it's very, very slow.

I've downloaded and installed all Windows 10 updates from MS.

I've used XP for about 15 years now and found it very user friendly.  I'll get used to Win 10 but for now, it's not as user friendly to me.  I don't know Win 7 either so I'm not sure if it'll be any easier for me to use that Win 10.

Do you know if MS Office that I used for XP will work with Win 10?  I very often use Word and Paint.

If no yellow flags then don't worry about it.

Classic Shell can probably make it look like XP too if you want.

I don't know about your Office but there are several free programs you can use instead:

https://www.pcworld....ternatives.html

I use Open Office and I've also tried Libre Office.

Thanks for the links.

It took over an hour for Win 10 updates to download and about 2.5 hours for "Configuring" and "Working on Updates" after I rebooted, which I thought was an extremely long time.  Do you think it's because something is missing, like a driver or something else?

Win 10 updates are fairly major.  Basically they replace everything but that seems a bit slow.  Let's see what Process Explorer shows:

Get Process Explorer

http://live.sysinter...com/procexp.exe
Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7+ - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Let's also try Latency Monitor:

Go to

http://www.resplendence.com/downloads

Scroll down to

System Monitoring Tools

and then find

LatencyMon 6.70 (or it may be a higher number if they update)

Click on Download free home edition

Save it then right click and Run As Admin.  It will install and then start the program.
It will tell you to click on the Start button but there isn't one.
Instead click on the green arrowhead (looks like a Play button).   Let it run for at least 20 seconds.  Then hit the red box to stop it.

Edit, Copy Report text to Clipboard then move to a REPLY and Ctrl + v to paste the text into a reply.

CONCLUSION
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Your system appears to be having trouble handling real-time audio and other tasks. You are likely to experience buffer underruns appearing as drop outs, clicks or pops. One or more DPC routines that belong to a driver running in your system appear to be executing for too long. Also one or more ISR routines that belong to a driver running in your system appear to be executing for too long. At least one detected problem appears to be network related. In case you are using a WLAN adapter, try disabling it to get better results. One problem may be related to power management, disable CPU throttling settings in Control Panel and BIOS setup. Check for BIOS updates.

MEASURED INTERRUPT TO USER PROCESS LATENCIES
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The interrupt to process latency reflects the measured interval that a usermode process needed to respond to a hardware request from the moment the interrupt service routine started execution. This includes the scheduling and execution of a DPC routine, the signaling of an event and the waking up of a usermode thread from an idle wait state in response to that event.

Highest measured interrupt to process latency (µs):   8421.248442
Average measured interrupt to process latency (µs):   8.765793

Highest measured interrupt to DPC latency (µs):       7835.455854
Average measured interrupt to DPC latency (µs):       4.582269

 REPORTED HARD PAGEFAULTS
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hard pagefaults are events that get triggered by making use of virtual memory that is not resident in RAM but backed by a memory mapped file on disk. The process of resolving the hard pagefault requires reading in the memory from disk while the process is interrupted and blocked from execution.

NOTE: some processes were hit by hard pagefaults. If these were programs producing audio, they are likely to interrupt the audio stream resulting in dropouts, clicks and pops. Check the Processes tab to see which programs were hit.

Process with highest pagefault count:                 msmpeng.exe

Total number of hard pagefaults                       168
Hard pagefault count of hardest hit process:          144
Number of processes hit:                              9
