My computer has been inundated and thus slowed down by constant pop-ups, most of them stemming form a program called Aurora. I need to clean my computer up and remove this/these programs, but don't know how. I've read through various forums on the subject here already but the tch talk hurts my layman head.

That being said, can we start fresh? What should I do first? Or at least in what order?

Thanks for any :tazz: .

Hi Bealsebub welcome to Geeks 2 Go. I regret the delay in responding but we are swamped.

Before I am able to analyze your log, you must read the information provided in the following link and do everything that is indicated from step 1 through step 5. Stop after installing HijackThis in its own folder. The folder should look something like this C:\HijackThis\HijacktThis.exe when you are finished. These steps often drastically reduce the number of problems we have to contend with and get you up and running much faster. But they probably won't remove your problem at this time. That is for you and I to fix.

You Must Read This Before Posting A Log

So, what next?

And more importantly, looking forward a bit, will I have to keep ALL of these programs I downloaded? How do I keep my computer safe from future attacks? That can be answered later on down the line. I just wanted to ask now before I forgot...

Hi Bealsebub,

That cleaned out a lot of junk but there is still more to go. For these bigger ones, we must proceed one at a time. As to whether you have to keep the programs....NO.but at least to the end of our work together. Some will be recommended though when all is clear.

We first attack an infection called Narrator

I need you to run the following programs and post the resulting logs when you are finished. In other words, I need 3 reports posted at once when all is finished.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1. Download FindQoologic-Narrator.zip save it to your Desktop.
http://forums.net-in...=post&id=134981

Extract (unzip) the files inside into their own folder called FindQoologic. preferably to your desktop
Open the FindQoologic folder.
Locate and double-click the Find-Qoologic.bat file to run it.
When a text opens, post it in a reply to your thread.

2. Download the RKFiles.zip from here:
http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip

Create a new folder called c:\Antispyware\RKFiles
Extract the contents of RKFiles.zip into this new RKFiles folder.

Then,

1. Reboot into Safe Mode

Restart and press the F8 key a few times after the BIOS loads -- the first thing you see when the pc "comes alive" and does its "self test" -- before windows loads).

2. Open the C:\Antispyware\RKFiles folder

* Locate and double-click the RKFILES.BAT to run this tool.
* Sit back and wait untill its finished.
* When it is finaly finished a text file will open.
* Save the contents of that text file.

Note: It should save by default to C:\Log.txt
* Find this log, right-click and rename it RKFiles_log.txt so you can post it later.

3. Reboot back to Normal Mode.

4. Post both logs as well as a new hijackthis log. Don't wait for an immediate response. The analysis and customized answer takes at least one hour of my time.

Regards,

Trevuren

Good work Bealsebub,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Download Killbox here: http://www.downloads...org/KillBox.exe and put it on your desktop

Open Killbox

Check the following boxes:

Standard File Kill
End Explorer Shell While Killing file

Copy & paste the full path of each of the files below into the Killbox topmost box.

C:\WINNT\VSAPI32.DLL
C:\WINNT\system32\mc-58-12-0000079.exe
C:\WINNT\System32\rrlkzz.exe

With the full path to the file name in the topmost textbox, Click the Red X ...and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes

Do this for each of the files listed. Some will not be deleted. Make sure you keep a list of them.

When you are through the list, use killbox to delete the files you were not able to delete as follows:

Open Killbox

Check the following boxes:

Delete on Reboot

With the full path to the file name in the topmost textbox. Click the Red X ...and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes

A second message will ask to Reboot now? you will need to click No (since you are not finished adding all related files in yet)

Click yes on the last file.

Note: Killbox will let you know if the file does not exist.

After the reboot scan with hijackthis and fix the following if they are still listed

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINNT\System32\rrlkzz.exe reg_run

Reboot and Post a new hijackthis log

Regards,

Trevuren

We must stop, disable and delete an added service (023)

1. To stop a service and set to 'disabled'

Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK

Click the Extended tab.

Scroll down until you find the service.

O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\svcproc.exe (file missing)

Click once on the service to highlight it.

Click Stop

Right-Click on the service.

Click on 'Properties'

Select the 'General' tab

Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box

From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'

Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.

2. To stop a service and set to 'disabled'

Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK

Click the Extended tab.

Scroll down until you find the service.

O23 - Service: hiacyaf - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\hiacyaf.exe (file missing)
Click once on the service to highlight it.

Click Stop

Right-Click on the service.

Click on 'Properties'

Select the 'General' tab

Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box

From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'

Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.

2. We will now delete the services:

1. Open HJT
2. Click on Config>>Misc Tools>>Delete an NT Service
3. Type SvcProc in the space provided and click OK
4. The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept

5. Repeat above procedures 1 through 4 inclusively with hiacyaf

6. REBOOT into SAFE MODE

7. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file (if it still is present):

C:\WINNT\svcproc.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\hiacyaf.exe

8. REBOOT back into Normal Mode

9. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

Okay, I went under the Extended tab of the services.msc function and didn't see ANY O23 anything. I didn't see either of those two files that you told me to Stop.

Should I proceed to Step 2, deleting the services?

Sorry, I should have been clearer in my directions. The files are not important at this stage. It is a service that you are trying to stop.

1. You are not looking for anything with 023, you are looking for something that looks like the following:

Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc)

Service: hiacyaf

2. If you are unable to find these 2 services, please download Service Filter.

3. Create a new Folder on your Desktop called Service Filter.

4. Unzip the Service Filter file and extract all its content to the new folder you just created.

5. Now, RUN Service Filter.vbs, wait a couple of seconds and it will generate a report.

6. Please post that log into this thread.

Regards,

Trevuren

Okay, didn't have to do the download of Service Filter. I went back and DID find the two services. They were already stopped, so I just disabled them, then deleted them and the rest.

Here's the new HJT log:

Alright...

After going into safe mode, I didn't see any of the files, so I'll take that as a good sign. I deleted the Real-Tens folder.

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren
