The Problem: My computer is slow. It will be fine for a few minutes and then if I try to do something really simple (like open a new Firefox tab or a new Windows Explorer window) it will freeze up for ~30 seconds before returning and being fine for another few minutes. This happens even without running many programs. Boot up is also slow.
My Question: Why is it slow? Should i upgrade to 16 GB RAM? Replace my Power Supply?
Typical Usage: Pretty basic, just use it for surfing the internet and editing spreadsheets, word docs etc. I don't do any gaming, video procesing etc
Computer Information:
I built it myself in 2009. All the parts were purchased in 2009
Windows 7, 64 Bit, Service Pack 1
CPU: Intel i5-750 Quad Core, 2.68 GHz
RAM: 4 GB (2x2 GB DDR3-1066 SDRAM, 533 MHz). OCZ Gold XTC
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC. P7P55D (LGA1156)
Power Supply: Seasonic S12D 750W http://www.pureoverc...onic-s12d-750w/
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 2793 MB
Steady state CPU temperature is about 35 deg C
More info about the problem:
- When I boot up and idle without any opening any programs, RAM usage is at ~40%
- During normal usage (5 or 6 tabs open in Firefox and maybe a spreadsheet open) RAM usage is ~80%
- I had a thread (http://www.geekstogo...dles-70-memory/) from 2016 on this forum to try and address the problem. Ultimately the thought was that it might have been the Power Supply Unit, but I never got to the point where I had a backup PSU and the time to test this theory out, so I never was able to resolve the issue. Plus I started using my smartphone more for day to day activities which displaced some of my computer time, so I've just been dealing with it for the last few years.
- If I had reason to believe that upgrading my RAM or PSU for ~$100 would fix the issue, I would do it. But I don't want to buy either/both only to find out that it was something else
Thank you!
