I have a Lenovo x1 carbon from about 2014. Windows 7. About 3 weeks ago it started telling me to replace the battery. It runs fine on the power adapter but only for about an hour on the battery. The new battery I would like to order is not in stock and will not arrive for 8 - 10 weeks.

 

The issue I am having is that after the laptop is shut down it will not start unless I unplug the power adapter and plug it back in. If I unplug it and plug it back in it starts normally and runs fine all day. If this is normal and expected and will resolve itself when I install a new battery then I will just keep on un-plugging and re-plugging until the new battery comes in. However, if this is not normal and not expected and will not resolve itself with a new battery, then I would like to know if there is anything else I should or could do to resolve this.

While you're waiting for the new battery ... to keep from wearing out the plug, insert a power strip and use its On/Off switch instead.

Good Idea and I will do that, but I would like to know if it is normal to have to do that with a declining battery even though the battery is fully charged and the power adapter is plugged in.

Not sure about your Lenovo X1 Carbon. Don't remember having that problem though my Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell XPS, HP x360 nor a couple of ancient Acer's.

UN-plugging and re plugging to get the Laptop to start is not normal behavior.

 

 

It sounds like a power supply, ac adapter issue but that would be normally be an intermittent problem where it wouldn't do every single time, so kind of odd behavior.

Try a power reset cycle:

 

To do that

 

Disconnect the ac adapter, take the battery out and disconnect anything else.  Now hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Reconnect the ac adapter only and see if the issue is resolved.

It doesn't sound usual, BUT with a battery that is failing, it could end up drawing more power than it should, which could overload or overheat the power adapter, which could shut itself off in order to protect itself. A new battery should resolve this, but it is also possible that the power adapter could be damaged due to the bad battery, or even that the power adapter has a problem which is being reported as a problem with the battery. It is impossible to tell without testing each item, often by swapping things out as it is hard to really test things. I wouldn't leave the laptop plugged in  until the battery is replaced.

Update on my battery problems:

 

I did try the power reset procedure suggested by Zep. It seemed to work, however, when I tried putting the old battery back in I started having the exact same start-up problems. I ordered a different battery than the one I originally wanted just so I could get it sooner. I Installed it today. I ran the power reset procedure again before I installed the new battery, let it charge a few hours, and so far it looks like it is back to normal. Also no more "consider replacing your battery" warning. I will know for sure after some time passes but my guess is it will be fine until this replacement battery starts to decline.
