To remove the double spacing in your log, please do the following:

.Please go to Start - Run... and type notepad.exe
.Hit OK.
.Now go to Format and uncheck WordWrap.
.Close Notepad.

4. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

5. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

A. Close ALL windows except HJT

B. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

C. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')


DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Hey Trevuren, thanks for helping! I was reading around and since my last post I also ran ewido in safe mode and i did quarantine a lot of stuff. Spy sheriff isn't popping up on startup anymore but the desktop is still 'frozen' so to speak where i can't change the background, so I still probably have other spyware or virus' on the loose.

Hi Ashana,

You have a LOP infection that often comes together with Messenger Plus. To remove it we will try the simple way first.

1. Go to Add/Remove programs. Double click on "Messenger Plus!" (or click on Remove)

2. The "Messenger Plus! - Setup" is now displayed. Click on the Uninstall button. Note: options displayed on the first screen are not related to the sponsor program.

3. The sponsor screen is now displayed (if you don't see it, search for it in your Task Bar). To prove that someone is currently reading the screen, you have to type the code that is displayed. Once you enter the code, press Uninstall.

4. If you entered the code properly, the program will ask you to confirm that you want to uninstall. You must answer "Yes" to this question, else, you won't have another chance of uninstalling.

5. To complete the uninstallation, follow the instructions that are displayed (the first one is to close all your Internet Explorer windows, that's very important). When everything is complete, REBOOT your computer.

Hey Trevuren, that sounds extremly easy, but Messenger Plus is not listed in my add/remove programs, there's just msn messenger 6.2. I looked down in the HJT log and saw where the folder was located and the weird thing is is that there is no messenger plus folder in program files either.

1. First, download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

2. Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite

• Install ewido security suite
• Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
• The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, exit Ewido

3. Reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

4. Once in Safe Mode, Run Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).

5. After you're done running Cleanup! follow the instructions below

• Run Ewido.
• Click on scanner
• Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
  • Archives
• Click on Start Scan
• Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "clean", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

6. Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop

Reboot into normal mode.

7. Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following:

SpySheriff

8. Exit Add or Remove Programs.

9. Delete the following, in bold, if found:

C:\Program Files\SpySheriff <-whole folder
C:\Windows\Desktop.html
C:\winstall.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\WMAGRE~1<-whole folder

10.Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet and that all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

Close HiJackThis.

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and go to Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download the smitfraud reg to your desktop.

Double-click smitfraud.reg on your desktop. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES. After the merged successfully prompt, please reboot your computer.

You should be able to change your desktop back to normal now.

Navigate to this folder using Windows Explorer:

C:\Windows\Prefetch

Delete ALL files inside of the Prefetch folder (do NOT delete the folder, just the files inside).

Post the report from Ewido and a new HiJackThis log into this topic

Hey Trevuren, that seemed to do the trick. I got my desktop back and spy sheriff is gone! Thank you so much! I can't express how much thanks i owe! Hopefully everything is gone. I couldn't save a report right away in ewido after it was done scanning because it automatically closed, so hopefully the starup report and process report are the right ones.

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.


3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.


Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
