Help please using a new Lenovo laptop with W10.

Because of the virus and ensuing lockdown, I have not been able to get a knowledgeable friend to show me around the device. And I find, over time, that I am forgetting more and more of the little I used to know. For example: what is the name of the operating mode in which the screen turns black-and-white; and DOS-like command lines are displayed? Seems to me the word Command Prompt was involved.

What is that mode called? How do I switch from normal mode W10 to it? How can I learn the designation (E: or D: or whatever) of a USB port into which I can insert a thumb drive? Where can I find an empty USB port?

I welcome your help. Thanks. ….. batpark

Do you mean booting Windows 10 into Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

There is no command that will list empty USB ports.

You can use Diskpart command to display a list of volumes which are installed on the local machine.

Diskpart

List Volume

Exit

Any USB port that is empty can be used for anything that requires USB. The drive letter usually doesn't matter but you will see what you plug in to it come up in File Explorer.

123Runner: Thanks for answering my badly framed query. I'll get my act together yet.   ...batpark
