When I let THIS PC show the contents of a HDD with multiple partitions, (only) one of them is designated with a CD icon. Is there a way to have it show like the other partitions ?

Check if there is a file called autorun.inf at the root of the 2nd partition and delete it.

 

You may need to change the Windows configuration to show hidden and system files.

Thank you for your effort to help. I have hidden and system files revealed. There is NO autorun.inf on the second partition. There are four partitions on that drive and they all contain a clone of my main system, but a week apart - so structurally they are the same, but differ in some data. To me that means their icons should not differ.

The registry method in that article is unsuitable as the HDD concerned is a removable drive. The method using 'Drive icon changer' has the ability to replace the inappropriate icon, but I would like the new icon to be identical to the icon of the other partitions on that HDD.I looked on the web for a suitable icon, but it turned out to NOT be the same as that for the other partitions. To ensure it is identical, it would be ideal if I could 'copy' the correct icon into the Drive icon Change program. Can you help with THAT ?

I'm not familiarized with the program, how about using the option Restore Default?

It is quite unclear what 'restore default' would affect. I know that when I update the O/S, several settings get changed - presumably to Default - which I do NOT want changed; so I am wary of 'defaults'. I would feel much safer using the 'Drive Icon Change' program (which achieves the desired result), but with the appropriate replacement icon.

The Restore Default option I'm referring is the one present on the Drive Icon Change screenshot.

Selecting the Restore Default put the CDRom icon back.

 

My research has found numerous DLL files in Windows that are supposed to have icons in them. Two problems - 1 identify the correct icon; 2 extract it from the DLL.

 

I believe that Resource Hacker, Icon Viewer and IcoFx may be able to solve problem #2

Check also if there isn't a file called desktop.ini hidden on the root of the partition.

 

What is the brand and model of the external drive? also if you connect this external drive to another computer the icon presented is the same?

I had edited my last post several times as things 'developed', but I don't see those edits in the thread.

 

I was able to extract likely suitable icons, using IcoFx from \windows\system32\imageres.dll, and \windows\system32\shell32.dll.

Then I could replace the unwanted icon with 'them' using Drive Icon Change, until I found the correct icon.

 

I had marked the problem as solved - and expressed my gratitude to you for the help you've given me.

 

Now I can not see the option to 'mark as solved'.  I saw it after posting.
