I have a Motorola SB5101 which I have had for quite some time - probably 6 or 7 years. In the last few weeks it keeps going offline and rebooting every few days. Today It went offline twice and took a LONG time to re-boot. Even after that I couldn't connect to some sites and the ones I could took a long time to load. I tried a manual re-boot by unplugging it from electric outlet and it still took a while to re-boot and was slow to connect. There a button on top that says STANDBY. I pressed that and all the light went off except the ONLINE light which stayed on steady instead of the normal blinking. I waited a minutes and pressed the STANDBY button again. Since then it seems better. I called my ISP and a recorded message says there was no outages in my area. I wanted to know if anyone had any idea what's going on with my modem?

Hello debodun,

Either bad modem or the ISP is sending a reboot command for some reason. I have seen a DDoS attack cause a modem to reset. Among other things, this can be caused by (cable) signal loss. Check your coax cables leading up to the modem, make sure everything is tight with no overly kinked cables. Also there may be a filter(filter: SNLP-1GCW or similar unit.) on the coax outside that went bad.

You should call your ISP to replace it, tell them it keeps restarting . Trying to get service is hard now I know.....

If your  upstream level goes above 50 dBmV, then the modem will reboot. That could be related to coax wiring or the filter thing and even the modem itself.

Your Modem is also very old. So the most logical thing to do is have it replaced an see if rebooting goes away, if not then technician will / need to inspect cabling inside an out as quoted.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. It was fine today. Seems that if there was a problem in the wires, this would be a constant problem.

The wiring causing a constant problem is not necessarily true. It's usually an intermittent problem. I just went through loss of internet that was intermittent. They traced it to a combination of the underground cable from the street and also a couple questionable coax connectors in the house.

If your provider is supplying the modem and router have them replace it. If it continues you will need to have them come out and trouble shoot the issue.

The cable guys just left. They said it looked like squirrels had chewed through the cable line and it was full of ice and water. They replaced the whole line and also installed new phone and Internet modems.

I ran a speed test on the new modem. Here are the results. Is it adequate?

FYI

What is the average internet speed in the US? According to data collected from our internet speed test, the national average internet speed is 42.86 Mbps.

A good internet speed is at or above 25 Mbps. These speeds will support most online activity, such as HD streaming, online gaming, web browsing and downloading music.

Others may chime in..

What speed do you pay for ?

20 Mbps. When Spectrum bought out Time Warner, I was placed on a TW "legacy" plan. A tech support I spoke with during my problems suggested I switch to the Spectrum plan and I could get more speed (100 mbps) and pay less. I really don't know why I wasn't offered this when Spectrum took over the local ISP market.

Are you happy with the speed ? Are you able to do what you need in a reasonable amount of time ? Without waiting for pages to load and E-Mail to open.

When I went to the spectrum plan from TWC it cost me an additional $5 per month to get more speed. For me it was worth it based on what I do. Spectrum is upping their minimum plan that was 100mbs to 200mbs,

You are paying for 20 and getting 21.6. That would be normal because they usually give about 10% more.

If you can do what you need with the plan you have then ok. If not, you can always check to see what they offer you.

I have enough for what do online. I'm not into high-end gaming. My concern now is my old computer running Windows 7.
