Hi Everyone,

 

I could use a little help. I recently repaired an older PC and upgraded it to a windows 10 system. It was running windows 7 64 bit, but when the win 10 finished it was running in 32 bit. 

 

I checked the info on the system and it is running a x64 CPU with built-in graphics. So I cant figure out why the system will not let me instal Win 10 64 bit.

 

I am a online gamer and I need the 64 bit OS for most of my games. Any advice or suggestions would be awesome. Thanks in advance for your time.

Couple of things of note in Speccy;

 

There are no chipset drivers for the MB shown to have been installed, as soon as Windows has been installed you must install the latest chipset drivers for the MB as the chipset is what enables the board to be able to communicate with all the other hardware, after the chipset drivers you install the storage/SATA AHCI drivers and then any add on GPU drivers. 

 

Please note that chipset drivers for new MBs must be installed from either the installation disk that shipped with the MB or direct from the MBs download centre, if you do not do this Windows update may download and install the wrong drivers and cause you no end of trouble.

Power Profile

Active power scheme: High performance

 

Change the Windows Power Plan to Balanced, Ultra and High Performance are a form of overclocking that is known to cause stability and overheating issues and the setting should only be used for gaming type notebooks that have a discrete GPU that needs the extra power.

What type of Windows product key did you use when you installed Windows 7, OEM or full retail, reason I ask is because the wrong version of Windows may have gotten downloaded when you created your Windows 10 installation media, depending on the computer that you created the Windows 10 media you may have missed selecting that you wanted the 64-bit version of Windows 10 Pro and not the 32-bit.

Ok, I have used your advice and downloaded the chipset specific drivers you pointed out in the URL you suggested. But I did not see a Motherboard driver there. I did install the audio, USB, and memory drivers though. Do I need to search for the main MB drivers somewhere else?

 

I will also place my computer back into Ballanced mode as suggested.

Something has gone badly wrong then because if you were previously running a 64-bit OS on the computer that was upgraded Windows 10 64-bit should have been installed.

 

Only thing that you can do is a clean install using the second option here which is for creating a Windows 10 ISO on either USB or DVD, you will be asked to select 32 or 64-bit using this option so take your time and be careful.

 

Not sure what you mean by motherboard driver, I never mentioned such a driver only the following which are in fact drivers for the MB "after the chipset drivers you install the storage/SATA AHCI drivers and then any add on GPU drivers.  "

Ahh, ok. Then I simply misunderstood. And I have installed the suggested drivers. I am going to attempt to perform a clean install by creating a bootable USB drive with the media creation tool. This will take a while, so please bare with me. I will let you know the results as soon as I have them. And I realy do appreciate your time.

No problem and no rush, sort the ISO, install Windows + the chipset and SATA AHCI drivers and test by using the computer as you normally would and only post back when you are happy that the issue is resolved or if you hit a snag.
