Hello,
Every morning I run adaware and registry mechanic and every morning two trojan horses pop up that I can't seem to get rid of. They are located in Documents & Settings\myname\local settings\temporary internet files\Content.IE5\randomfolder\winupdate...[1].exe.

I have two of these and I've tried to go into safemode as administrator and I've found the files but can't delete any of them?

My hijack this logfile is below. Any help would be appreciated.

Chris

Hello cghoenes :tazz:

Not too much here

Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below service:

Loading Outpost Connections (KDE)

When you find them, double-click on each one. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Run HiJackThis. Click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (copy and paste):

KDE

Click ok.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES.

run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here with a new hijack log

Hey cghoenes :tazz:

Most of that stuff is in your temporary directory. We'll clean that out now. You should clean those out once every couple of days as malware likes to hide there.

Download and install CleanUp! Here
but do not run it yet.
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).

Using windows explorer( right click start, left click explore)
Search for and delete these files and folders
C:\WINDOWS\ucmoreiex.exe
C:\WINDOWS\FONTS\web.exe

Now run the cleanup program. Make sure it is set to standard cleanup

Reboot and post one more Hijack log and you should be good to go

Thanks for the info. It looks like I freed up over 1 GB of space by using cleanup4.0. Every day I usually go into tools and setting in internet explorer and delete those temporary files, but there must have been some hidden that I missed.

There is one thing that concerns me. I'm running windows xp professional and after I rebooted the computer in normal mode after running cleanup, all of my graphics (such as the blue toolbar, etc.) that make xp unique seem to have disappeared. I now have the basic gray toolbar and everything looks more like windows 2000. Would there be any way to reload these files?

Hey cghoenes :tazz:

Open notepad, copy and paste next content (bold) in it:

dir C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Save this as look.bat ,choose to save as *all files and save it to your desktop.
Doubleclick on it and notepad will open with some text in it.
Copy and paste this in your next reply.

ok Let's fix this.

download a copy of luna.msstyles here:
http://users.pandora...patchy/luna.zip

Unzip it and MOVE the luna.msstyles which is present in that folder you unzipped to next folder: C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna
Don't move it to anywhere else than that folder!

When moved it there, rightclick on your desktop > properties ... and look if Windows XPstyle is now present again. Choose apply and OK.

If not, reboot first, and try again to select Windows XPstyle

Thanks!
I think that did it.

Below is my latest hijack log. I will run cleanup 4.0 in safe mode much more often as I think that helps alot.

I appreciate your help.

That looks good :tazz:

your system is clean ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
