Hello, Geeks to Go--
I'll confess at the start that I'm out of my depth, a Mac person trying to rescue my daughter's Windows machine, so any help is greatly appreciated.

The symptoms are that if the computer sits briefly with no user input, at least one drive--C, I think-- starts to run without stopping: constant disk access sound, light on steady. Response to keyboard and mouse drops to a crawl--sometimes several minutes--sometimes stops entirely. If you get started before the disk thrshing begins, you can usually work okay, as long as you keep going.

I've gone through your trouble-shooting list: Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D removed a lot of stuff the first time through, but this was before I had your list, so I don't have logs. Recent runs come up clean. Norton with latest definitions finds nothing.TDS-3 found nothing.

Trend Housecall reported Troj Multi DRP.GD and TSPY Start PA.A, associated, respectively, with C:\_Restore\Archive\FS339 and FS239, and said "Cannot access." I have not been able to locate files by those names. I tried to run Housecall again today, to verify my notes, but it hangs up at the scan now button.

I've installed all the recommended Windows critical upgrades.

Here's the HijackThis log:

Hi, and thanks for your reply--
Since my last post, I've run Cleanup again--it thew out a lot of stuff, but didn't seem to have any affect on the problem. I also ran Norton Anti-Virus, with new definitions, this afternoon, but it didn't find anything, either.

Finally, I ran Trend Housecalls again, and it reported the same two problems:Troj NultiDRP.GD, cannot access, C:_\Restore ARchive\FS339, and TSPY Start PA.A, cannot access, C:\_Restore ARchive\FS239. I can't locate either of these files, and Googling the threat names and searching in on-line malware databases doesn't turn them up, either.

On other strange behavior I've noticed: there are no restore points in System Restore, and if you try to go to a previous month, you're taken to a date in 1996--before this computer existed!

Here's the new Hijack This log:

Hi Eric_Ladner

Your HJT.log is clean, but I now you have problems with malware, I would like you to run the panda scan this is a better online scan than trendmicro

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
Please post the logs From Panda virus scan and HJT.log we will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

Hi again,
I've spent a good bit of today trying to get a complete Panda ActiveScan run for you. It runs until it gets to Local Folders\Outbox. Then the animation continues, but no further progress is ever reported, and eventually the boojum gets it, and I have to restart the system. I've kept it going for 30 - 45 minutes at this stage with no progress.

The final status report of three runs has been:

System scanned, no infections
Files scanned, 118,052, 13 infected
Messages scanned, 2, no information showing.

I also did one run set to scan only the hard drives. It completed normally, finding five infected files. Here's its log file:

Incident Status Location

Adware:Adware/nCase No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\saie_gdf.dat
Adware:Adware/PortalScan No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\winupdt.bin
Adware:Adware/nCase No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\saieau.dat
Adware:Adware/nCase No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\saie_kyf.dat
Adware:Adware/FavoriteMan No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\im64.dll

Then I tried to do a scan with just Email selected, but it did not progress at all.
So, it looks like we have at least 8 unidentified problem files, possibly in the email area.

Are we going to have to erase the C drive?

Thanks!

Hi Eric_Ladner

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Then I tried to do a scan with just Email selected, but it did not progress at all.
So, it looks like we have at least 8 unidentified problem files, possibly in the email area.
You can Delete all the e-mails that will help Panda to do the full scan most will be infected anyway.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please download and install AD-Aware.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first. Don't run yet.

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop. We may need it later.

Please download SpyBot V1.4 http://www.majorgeek...wnload2471.html Update the program then run it.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Run Ad-aware se let remove all it finds

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure all are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\saie_gdf.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\winupdt.bin
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\saieau.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\saie_kyf.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\im64.dll

Let the system reboot.

Please download, install and run this disk cleanup utility called Cleanup version 4.0!: http://downloads.ste...p/CleanUp40.exe
It will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders ( a common hiding place). You will also regain a massive amount of disk space. Here is a tutorial which describes its usage: http://www.bleepingc...tutorial93.html
Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin. When the scan has finnished click the close button
When prompted the system will log off to let it clean out the remaining files. when the log screen shows log back on and continue the fix.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
Please post the logs From Panda, Ewido and HJT.logWe will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.
