Hi there.
I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to help me eradicate a virus (or several) from my puter. I think I've done all the virus checks and updating i can, so here's my Highjackthis log. I hope I have started off on the right foot to remove this thing. Let me know what needs to be done, and i will most certainly do it. Thanks a bundle.

Highjackthis log:

ok thanks excal!
my dell suport station apparently removed a trojan virus yesterday, so the fatal error message on my desktop no longer comes up.
that being said, i still do not have access to my desktop properties (i.e. the only tabs available are 'screen saver' and 'settings' tabs), and my computer is definitely running slower than it used to.

here's my new hijackthis log, hopefully we can fix whatever damage or viruses still remain on my computer.

thanks, tty soon.

See how this works out for you :tazz:

Please right-click: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt .

Reboot and then try out your desktop.

Please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Hijack this log, ActiveScan log and please tell me how your computer is runnin.

i'm not entirely sure, but i'd say my computer is running fine, but not spectacular, if that is any help (which it probably isn't)
one thing i do know though is that is is always scorching hot (laptop) and the fan is working some serious overtime.

i dunno if we can assess the ram speed any better, but at least you have the logs now.

bye for now, thanks again, i really appreciate your help.

Hi ryan,

Hows your screen first of all? Did that come back with that reg fix I gave you?

You still have part of the infection on your system. The active scan is posting postive results of that.

So lets try the whole fix to ensure that we get it all this time

As far as your fan goes, this might be a hardware issue, i am not sure, but we can do some checking after we clean you up :tazz:

Whom ever is using the FunWebproduct web site, needs to reconsider. Funweb products are fun to use, but come loaded with crapware.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

THE FIX

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HiJackThis and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:
===================================================
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://imgfarm.com/i...etup1.0.0.5.cab

Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe<====Make sure it this file, and only this file (some Legit files look very smiliar)

===================================================

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Now open Ewido Security Suite
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save Report
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!

Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Let us know how your computer is running ;)

here you go.
I guess my computer runs fine, but when i have winamp and some ie windows open, the songs skip, which they never used to do. As you can imagine, that's just really annoying, so if we can help that run more smoothly, that would be awesome.

Anyway, here are the few logs you needed. Thanks again for your ongoing help.

Hi Ryanzee,

but when i have winamp and some ie windows open, the songs skip, which they never used to do.

I am not sure what would cause. We did not do anything that would effect that.
Do you have the availabilty to reinstall Winamp to see if that helps?

Just a few random bad files and folders to clean up.

Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\Documents and Settings\Ryan Zufelt\Application Data\PSGuard.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\newmsrdk
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\inf\farmmext.inf
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "no".

Do that for the following files also, until you get to the last one, then click "yes" when HJT asks you to reboot.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\srpcsrv32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\INF\btgrab.inf
C:\WINDOWS\INF\farmmext.inf
C:\WINDOWS\INF\polmx2.inf
C:\WINDOWS\satmat.ini
C:\WINDOWS\smdat32a.sys
C:\WINDOWS\smdat32m.sys
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\srpcsrv32.dll

Post back when you finish and tell me how your computer is running :tazz:

i think everything is running well now- my winamp no longer skips and all of my properties have been restored.
my computer can run five or six ie windows at once pretty efficiently, so it looks as though the problems have been fixed!

i run a pretty simple computer- so if there is any junk or needless programs that you don't think would benefit my computer, then i think i should delete it/them.
thanks so much for your help, and more importantly, for your time.

here is one more hijackthis log in case you want it.
thanks again.

Hey ryan,

Do you use a nokia phone? and if you do, do u use it with your compueter?

(this doesn't delete these items, just removes them from startup saving resources)

Open Hijackthis, scan

Place a check next to the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTHelper] cthelper.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [CTHelper] cthelper.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /background
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [CTHelper] cthelper.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Click Fixed Checked

Reboot

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE

Spybot S&D

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4

Spywareguard

IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:

Sygate

Kerio

ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox

Opera

This site is a great source for tightening up security on Internet Explorer settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.
