OK, my computer seems to have gotten the smitfraud trojan. I tried running spybot and norton (expired ~8 months ago) as soon as things started going funky, but it didn't catch it. Now my Add/Remove Programs and Find Files search are inoperative. Norton starts, but hangs, and spybot detects nothing. I deleted the .bmp file that displayed the message on my desktop "Trojan-spy.html.smitfraud.c", etc., etc. and tried a few other things, but I can't make any progress. IE opens, but with no address bar and no site, so I'm using another computer. There are number of processes running that don't google, like "ipvd.exe". Most other software seems to run. I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.


Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.


Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.


Now open Ewido Security Suite

• Click on scanner
• Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
  • Archives
• Click on Start Scan
• Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save Report
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Excal,
Ok, got through most of the instructions. The new HJT log and a typed-up version of what Ewido removed are pasted in below. First, what happened:

-did all the installing except the adaware (somehow missed bringing it over), rebooted
-ran the HJT and removed ALCXMNTR.exe
-ran the smitfraud removal tool. Everything in the window went by pretty quick, so I'm not sure how it worked because the last couple lines I could catch said unsuccessful next to whatever it was looking for
-shut down for a month
-came back, installed the adaware
-rebooted in safe mode, ran adaware and ewido (thought I saved a log)
-forgot to change the desktop item (still can't get to anything in my control panel anyway)
-rebooted and tried to run the pandascan link, but IE is not running properly.
-rebooted at least once more
-could not find any way to get to the desktop option mentioned
-ran HJT and created log
-could not find ewido log, so ran ewido and typed up all the file names in quarantine (see below)

A couple follow-up items:
-I have a file FixO on my desktop, zipped and in its own folder. Did I get that here? It appears on the USB drive I used to carry everything over, but it isn't familiar
-IE, control panel, etc. aren't working yet. The first ~ten R1's in the HJT log- do they explain this?

Hey Ill

this is what it says:

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

So it appears it would be C:\smitfiles.txt. I believe....if you can't find it, just boot into safe mode and run smithrem again, and that will get you another one.

Excal, I looked again for the file, but could not find it, so I ran Smitrem again in safe mode- those lines do flash by too quick to read most of them. I then looked for the file- couldn't find it. Looked in C, each of the subfolders off that, D (the back-up partition), my desktop folders, the subfolder I ran smitrem from on my desktop, pretty much everywhere I could think of. Any other possibilities?

Can you go to start>search then put in this:
Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

When I try start>search>for files or folders... nothing happens. I also can't run the pandascan. When I click on it, IE opens to a blank screen with no address bar. IE opens to the same blank page when I boot the computer up. What else can I do?

Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save programs to your desktop for easy access, Please do not run any of the programs unless told to do so.

Unzip SpSeHjfix to its own folder (ie c:\SpSeHjfix)


Run the CleanUp! installer. You dont need to do anything with it right now.

Update About:Buster

• Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
• Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
• Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
• Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
• If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
• Now close About:Buster

Update CWShredder

• Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
• Click Check For Update
• Close CWShredder

THE FIX

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

5. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

6. Open HiJack and do a scan.

• AboutBuster will finish and open a new page. Follow the instructions for protection on that page.
• Shut down AboutBuster. A log should have been created.Please Save this log and copy it in your next post.

10. Now run SpSeHjfix. A log will be saved in the same folder that you put the exe into. Please post the results of that log in your next reply.

11. Run the program CleanUp!

12. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

13. Please post an Active scan log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.
