I was trying to solve some malware issues on my XP machine (NTFS). I was told to update to SP1A. So I downloaded and ran the update.

After some process the machine restart itself and went to a boot menu says Windows cannot boot properly and I have to choose from Boot Normally, Safe Mode, etc.

I've tried all but regardless what I chose it only restart itself and went back to the boot menu. I never thought that updating XP would be this fatal and haven't backed up my important data.

Please help. Thx very much.

It's June 2005 and you are just now installing SP1? I don't think the SP hurt the machine- what kind of malware are you trying to recover from? You need to get into safe mode, or somehow interrupt the boot process (by unchecking auto restart in Control Panel> System> Advanced> Start Up and Recovery)

Since you have XP Pro, have you ever set up the Recovery Console or ASR?

I heard a lot of installation problems and compatilibity that's why I turn off the auto-update.

I can't even get to safe mode, its always restart itself after whatever I chose on the boot menu.

No, I don't have the ASR disk.

At least tell me how to / where to retrieve my address book files, I am familiar with console.
