I already have Ewido on my machine.... and per the above, I don't know how to get this computer into safe mode. It's a work PC and I can get it into the Safe Mode login screen but I can't get past the login. I've tried my regular username/password with no luck and also two different administrator username/passwords with no luck either. So, I am not sure how to get past the Safe Mode login. It seems odd to me that it would be difficult to get to, but that's what's happening...

I've run Ewido a few times on this box in the last week and it's found stuff, but I'll try to run it again.

Thanks,
Mike

Still can't get rid of the rmpau.exe deal.

See notes above for Safe Mode operation. I cannot get into Safe Mode.

Thanks...
Mike

Hello.

Ewido should get rid of these files in safe mode, but since ou cannot get into safe mode at this time, we will have to do it the manual way =).

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINNT\system32\rrmpau.exe reg_run
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [HAS.exe] "C:\Program Files\HAS\HAS.EXE" -m
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [c0spRVK4i] dpswsewm.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):
HAS.EXE
Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\Program Files\HAS

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINNT\system32\rrmpau.exe
dpswsewm.exe For this file, you will have to search for it using the search feature, and then locate the file in Windows Explorer and delete it.

After that, Reboot.

Then post a new HiJackThis log for me to look at

If they come back, I have another way of getting rid of these :tazz:

Do I have to delete HAS (Heatsoft Automatic Synchronizer)? I use this program as a way of automatically backing up my files to the server. It's an automatic synchronization tool that I've enjoyed using over the last year or so.

I don't have to have it by any stretch, but I thought I'd ask...

As far as I know, this is what HAS stands for.

I'll remove the others now and reboot. If I need to get rid of HAS, like I said it's no problem. Let me know when you have a second.

Hope your Tuesday is going well!!

Update as of 8:40: I cannot delete rrmpau.exe (it's in use, but does not show up in the processes menu of the Task Manager as being in use, so I am not sure *where* it's in use.

The search function does not find dpswsewm.exe either.

I'm not sure if the instructions you left me are generic, but they again refer to using Safe Mode which you acknowledged in the first part of your reply that I could not do. In any case, I tried to do what you asked on regular boot and those are the problems that I ran into.

I am still getting random pop-ups (about 1 per 3 sites visited) that indicate the presence of spyware.

Good Morning.

Sorry about the directions for safemode, the instructions are generic.

Is there any way that you can ask someone at your work the password to get into Safemode?

I did a search for HAS.exe and it shows a worm. You do not need to delete it if you use it. We will run some online scans and see what they come up with.

We will deal with the files that you could not delete, once you run these scans and find out about safe mode.

Please run at least 2 of these online virus scans:

Housecall<<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan<<<Accept default settings, save and post the log
RAV online scan<<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust Antivirus Web Scan<<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Bitdefender ScanOnline<<<Place a check by everything under 'Scan Options'.

I am running one scan right now and will run another after it's finished.

One of the guys I know in the Desktop Group is looking into the Safe Mode thing, though he isn't sure why the things I tried didn't work.

HAS.exe is not the same as the thing you found in your search. It's a stand-alone program offered at download.com that I've been using for awhile without an problems.

I'll let you know how this goes. Thanks for the patience. Hopefully, I can solve the Safe Mode thing and get rid of this stuff permanently.

Hello,

Go ahead and keep HAS.exe then.

If we can get into safemode, this whole thing should be fixed rather quickly.

Let me know if you can get into safe mode.

I believe I can get into Safe Mode now. The second scan is running though so I don't want to stop it. Should I just follow your instructions above for what to do in Safe Mode if I can get in?

Ok, here goes nothing...

Ok, first the results of the online scans. Then the Ewido Log from when I was booted into regular mode. Then the Ewido Log from when I was booted into safe mode (A note on this: I had some weird issue so I uninstalled Ewido before I booted into safe mode and then re-installed it, updated the definitions and went about my business. But, it seems that I might have lost some of the premium part of the demo maybe. Something seemed different about it). After all that, then the HiJackThis! Log after I rebooted back into regular mode.

That rrmpau.exe will NOT go away! That thing is unreal! I deleted it by hand, in safe mode, removed it from the recycle bin and fixed it with HiJackThis! and it STILL won't go away! God only knows what else is stuck....

Thanks in advance for all your help!!!

Click here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each. Keep track of any files it tells you either could not be found or could not be deleted, as you'll need those later:

C:\WINNT\system32\rrmpau.exe

For the files that it either couldn't find or couldn't delete, in the killbox again this time, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Then post a new HiJackThis log, we will see if that gets rid of it.

ugh.... it's still there after using killbox.exe

and i am still getting spyware/adware pop-ups. is that being caused by the rrmpau.exe file or is it something else that's buried in there?

this never ends!! thanks for taking the time!!

Hello,

Sorry this is taking so long, I am just trying to think of ways to kill that one file.

Lets try TDS-3, its one of the best Anti Trojan scans out on the web.

Download it here

Once downloaded, please install it, download the latest updates, and run a scan. if it gives you to option to post a log, please do so. Otherwise tell me what it fixes.

Then post a new HiJackThis log.

Thanks!

I have TDS-3 and have run it more than once.... I will try it again, though and see what happens.

I am curious to know if that file is what's causing the pop-ups or if there is something else that's still out there that's doing it. It worries me to think that it might be something else after all this work you've done. I hope not!!

Also, would you recommend I try to use Killbox and check the (3rd) option to "replace" the file so that it tries to overwrite it or whatever?

Maybe that rrmpau.exe is not a bad file? Just thinking outloud here. I have no idea what that is but could it be a file through my work that can't be deleted?
