When I use the boot disk I get to the A:\ but when I try to give the command to run the setup file in Windows SE the CDROM drive is not recognized and I cannot install windows.

Howdy and welcome to G2G:
What did you use to format the hdd??
When you use the Win98SE bootdisk (floppy), did you use the option to "Start WITH cd-rom support"??
If yes, when you changed to your cd-rom drive in order to install Win98, did you go at least one drive letter up from the usual - ie: cd-rom is normally d: drive, it will now be e: drive until Windows is loaded !!

I used the Dos prompt.
Had it read A:\>
Then typed format c:
Then booted up with a bootup desk I had made on a 3.5 floppy.

Did you use the "Start with cd-rom support" option when you used the boot floppy??
