However, after using the version now being released with winXP, one can't help but long for some of the new features, when using it's older cousin, in win98. Due to circumstances beond my control, I am regularly stuck using an ageing machine, running win98, to do a wide variety of things. While few of the programs I use are overly resource taxing, the combination of less than ideal system resources, eternal multi-tasking, my utter lack of patiance and habit of doing several things at once and a gauntlet of scripts and programs out there that seek to install themselves and run concealed in the background, I am forever bogging this system down, occationally to the point where a soft-rebot is impossible.
There's one function in winXP's 'Close Programs' utility that I find myself using on a constant basis. It's the screen which lists all programs currently running, however, unlike it's win98 relative, it also displays a running tally of each programs resource consumption. There are several situations in which I find this to be life(or at least data)-saving. It also seems to be a more indepth (longer) list, but that's probibly either my imagination or a result of there simply being more 'things' going on within an XP system.
As I said, I'm looking for an upgrade to the win98 version of this utility, designed for use with win98. Now that I think about it, it's probably just as likely that there are third-party verdors offering software with these capabilities. Can you point me towards anything like this? Your guidance will be greatly appreceated. Thanks!
