I'm fixing a friend's pc for her. Automatic Update (windows) was unavailable, I put SP2 (XP) on with a disk and did some research. I've scanned and found many things with avg, avast, stinger, spybot, adaware and cwshredder. I cannot find anything more. But automatic update is still disabled every time I reboot. In the registry there is a delete flag in the wuauserv key, when I delete it and change the start value to 2, I can access the AU site, but when I reboot the flag reappears and the start value is set to 4. Something is still there changing it, but I can't find it. Google pointed me to people with a certain executable (net... something), but I could not find these on this machine. When I try to set the update service to automatic in the service list, it says it is marked for deletion. I'd appreciate any help in tracking down this (hopefully) last remnant. Thanks....Tom.

Hi Thinger62,

You have that problem because your PC is infected. Lets clean up the PC then we can handle the windows Update part :tazz:

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://www.noidea.us...050515010747824
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {15559CB9-A463-623C-BD00-2636D03C7764} - C:\WINDOWS\cdapp\kuapwvsknp.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ldnlqoq] c:\windows\system32\fidjklv.exe r

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Locate and delete the files -

c:\windows\system32\fidjklv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\cdapp\kuapwvsknp.dll

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.

Run an online scan at Panda and save the scan report.

Run Hijack This and post a fresh Hijack This log here along with Ewido and Panda scan reports.

Did you have any problems or error messages when you ran Nailfix.cmd ??

Lets try this one more time. Please make a note of all error /warning messages and let me know of them.

Please download CleanUp and save it on your Desktop.

Please reboot the PC in Safe Mode. There will be two options - Safe Mode and Safe Mode with networking. Choose the without Networking option!!!!

Please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Open Add or Remove Programs (click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control panel. This should be the 3rd item). Uninstall or remove the following items -

Weird on the Web

Locate and delete the folder and files -

C:\Program Files\WeirdOnTheWeb <----- Full folder

C:\WINDOWS\usta33.ini
C:\WINDOWS\cdapp\kuapwvsknp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\cdapp\kuapwvsknp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ch.exe
C:\silent??.exe
C:\silent53.exe

Run CleanUp and delete all temp files including temporary internet files.

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.

Run Hijack This and post a fresh Hijack This log here. Let me know of any error /warning messages that you encountered during the fix.

No error messages with nailfix the first time, but I think I know what I did wrong. In the nailfix folder there are two files, one command script, one a command utility. I clicked on the utility, I think, the first time and got a brief dos window. This time I did the other file, and nail.exe appears to be gone.
As for deleting the files, the only file in the cdapp folder was kuapwvsknp.dat, not .exe or .dll. I deleted the .dat file this time around. I didn't the first time. I hope that was the right one, or at least not an important one. I realized, as I ran Cleanup, that it would empty my recycle bin, so the .dat file is gone. I found a kuapwvsknp.exe file, but not in the cdapp folder. It was in the windows\prefetch folder. Was, it's gone now. I suppose if that was not the right one I can get a copy from one of my pc's and put it back.
There was no ch.exe file, nor was there a silent??.exe file. I did find and delete the silent53.exe file.
Here is the latest hijack logfile:

Hi thinger62,

You can delete all files in the prefetch folder. Dont delete the folder however. Prefetch folder is almost the equivalent of the Recent documents.

You can delete the file - kuapwvsknp.dat from the recycle bin also. No problem.

There is one more virus / worm on the PC. We need to run an online scan on it.

Please visit Kaspersky and do an online scan. In case you have problems with Kaspersky, please do an online scan at any of the other online scan sites listed in my signature below. Save the scan report.

Reboot the PC and post a fresh HJT log along with the scan report.

Hi thinger62,

Lets get that one file listed. The others are part of system restore points and we will get them after the PC is completely clean.

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tasks service] taskservices.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft JavaVM] msjarun.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [tasks service] taskservices.exe

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

Reboot the PC in safe mode.

Open Windows Explorer (right click on Start and then click on explore). Locate and delete the following folders and files -

C:\WINDOWS\system32\q8h3lltm
taskservices.exe
msjarun.exe
use the Windows search function to locate the last two files

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch and delete all the files in that folder. Dont delete the folder, only the files in it !!!!!!!!

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.

Run Hijack This and post a fresh HJT log.

No, the automatic update problem was resolved in the first round....I was surprised when you kept finding things in the log files. I really appreciate your help. If I wasn't so fond of him, my first-born would be on the way to you, fedex :tazz: . I learned a lot during this too. Thanks much....

Hi thinger62,

CONGRATULATIONS !!!! The PC is clean :tazz:

I would recommend the following steps to keep your PC clean (especially Step 8 now that your PC is clean) –

PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR FUTURE

Operating System
1. Keep the Windows and Internet Explorer updated with the latest fixes. These fixes are available free from Microsoft. Click on Tools in the IE menu bar and then on Windows update. You can also the following links

Windows security and critical updates
Internet Explorer security and critical updates

Also ensure that automatic updates are enabled for faster updation of the system.
(Right click on My Computer on your desktop, properties and Automatic Updates tab.

Anti-Virus Software
2. Keep your Anti-virus program updated with the latest definitions. Some of the common anti-virus programs in use are :

Norton Anti-Virus
McAfee Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Virus --- freeware
Avast Home Edition --- freeware

Use only one anti-virus program as multiple such programs can create conflicts between themselves and severely hamper the performance of your PC.

Firewall
3. You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
Sygate Personal Firewall, Kerio Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm

Internet Browsers
4. Have robust explorer settings. It is preferable to use an internet browser other that IE as most of the malware is targetted at IE. In case you prefer to use IE, then download a list of innocent looking but harmful websites from IE-Spyad and install it on ur PC. IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your internet explorer's restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't really innocent at all.

Some alternate browsers I suggest are Firefox Mozilla Browser and Opera

Ensure that Security level, irrespective of whichever browser you use, is set at Medium or higher, restrict the usage of cookies and activeX components.

Spyware Protection
5. Have a wall of protection against spyware / adware by installing SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs.
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources.
SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation and browser hijack attempts. Both have free ongoing updates.

Spyware Removers
6. Install programs for scanning for malware and uninstalling them. Two of the best programs, both are freeware, are :

Spybot Search & Destroy - A powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

AdAware SE Personal Edition - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.

Regular Maintenance of PC
7. Finally, invest some time for regular maintenance of your PC. Delete the temporary Internet files, temporary files, cookies etc. Click on Start button, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and run the program Disk Cleanup. Follow the instructions.

An alternate freeware software which can be used is CleanUp.

Keep your Registry clean. My favourite software is Registry First Aid. This is not a freeware but a trial version can be downloaded.

System Restore Points
8. Since your PC is currently clean, create a system restore point. A system restore would enable you to revert to the settings on the PC when the restore point was created. It is also a good idea to flush all earlier system restore points which may be containing infected files.

A. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

B. Restart your computer.

C. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Go ahead and enjoy a clean PC !!!!!!!!!!!!!
