Hi,

My computer has recently slowed greatly without any known cause like installing a new application etc. I have 512Mb of memory installed and at any given time, normally I could expect to find task manager reporting around 230000k physical memory available, but now it is more like 120000k max!

I use an up-to-date virus scanner, a hardware and the windows xp firewall and real time spyware protection, but was wondering if you could take a look at my hijackthis log to see if you can spot anything.

Thanks for your help!

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\GameDrvr.exe" /startup "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0500.dll"

O16 - DPF: {AB29A544-D6B4-4E36-A1F8-D3E34FC7B00A} (WTHoster Class) - http://www.wildtange...iker/wtinst.cab

Then reboot.

No real malware, but a lot starting up that may not be necessary. Maybe you can weed some out.
Is everything slow? Or just internet?

Let me know.

OK, I've done what you said, I'd wondered what that Wildtangent was in the past and so never removed it. The rest of the start up items, I think I need, I've looked through them many times to try and keep my startup as sleek as possible and I think its at the best state I can realistically get it!

It's everything that is slow, just the whole computer in general and like I said, it used to typically have around 230000K of physical memory free in task manager, now it is more like 120000K and I just can't figure out why, everything I have running I need/use a lot; AV, AntiSpy, MSN, Googlesearch, but I had all this before the sudden drop in memory!

I'd normally consider myself to be ok with computers, but I'm really stuck at the moment! With it being a laptop too, it's pretty hard for me to upgrade, I have a spare slot for more RAM but I'm tryin to discover what type it is so I can buy it and boost myself up to 1Gb, but thats a different matter!

Thanks for your help Pieter, if you have any other suggestions I'd appreciate it! :tazz:

Can you look in TaskManager which ones are the biggest memory hogs?

Are you running the latest build of the Microsoft AntiSpyware beta ?

These should be expendable:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [InCD] C:\Program Files\Ahead\InCD\InCD.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\jusched.exe

And this site might help you in determining the type of memory you need:
http://www.kingston....cts/default.asp

Let me know.

OK, I've got rid of those like you said and yes I'm running the latest build of Microsoft AntiSpyware.

The biggest memory hogs are mcshield.exe (~26000k), svchost.exe (~25000k), explorer.exe (~21000k), gcasDtServ.exe (~12000k) and gcasServ.exe (~8000k).

But these obviously vary depending on what's running. I've now managed to increase on average to 170000k free, better, but still not great! Can you think of anything else? Sorry to keep asking, but you've helped a lot so far!

I visited that site, but my laptop isn't major brand so I can't find it in the drop down! I'm going to try contacting the manufacturers, see what they say!

Thanks for all your help!

Sometimes resident scanners do not agree with other software. I would try to uninstall MSAS and see if you can find a replacement that agrees with your setup better.
Read for example here:
