My mom has had this Cpu for about a year now and this problem has just recently started to happen. When I go to boot up the system will not recognize any disk drives at all. I have tried to run the windows boot disk and Norton but both are unsuccesful in solving the problem. I have tried moving all the cables to different drives and they all seem fine. I did have this happen before about a month ago but I some how got the system to reboot I ran norton antivirus and scandisk and I also defragged and everything seemed fine for about a month. then it happened again and I can't get it to reboot. As strange as this sounds the first time it happened and I got it to reboot I just kept hitting control and delete during bootup when it was trying to find all the disk drives it recognized them and booted right away but not this time. Please help me any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am stumped.

Welcome titan7342 :D

Sounds like your motherboard may be failing. <_<

You could try clearing your BIOS/CMOS to see if that helps. Disconnect the power, remove the battery for at least five minutes, replace the battery, reconnect the power, and reboot.

Well it's been almost a month and I haven't had a chance to pull the battery but I did sit down to try and boot the CPU today. On boot up it reconized the hard drive for some reason, but when it went to the windows boot screen it just kinda froze. after trying to use the rescue floppy a few times I couldn't get it to boot into windows normal mode or safe mode. after about an hour of working on it and rebooting about 12 times I tried to reboot again and now all of a sudden it doesn't reconize the hard drive again. The CPU does reconize the CD-rom drive though. Is it possible that this is a problem with my hard drive and not the motherboard? and if so can you give me any suggestions on how to correct this problem? Thanks.

Could be a failing hard drive. What kind of hard drive is it. Most mfg's have free diagnostic tools you can download to a floppy and test the drive.

Ok I have reformatted the Hard drive and reinstalled Windows 98 but I seem to still be having problems with other things now. I cannot get the CPU to recognize the modem, and I think there is a problem with my Diplay adapters or something also because when I go to control panel to change my screen resolution I can't the only choice I have is 640x480 and for color I have either 2 color or 16 color.I have also noticed that in device manager screen I have 3 items that have yellow question marks along with a yellow circle with a black exclamation mark inside of it on them under other devices. They are as follows PCI Card, PCI ethernet controller, and PCI multimedia audio device all which are integrated into the motherboard. I have checked for conflicts but they all say there is no conflicts. But at the same time there is no drivers installed for them either. Shouldn't windows 98 install the driver for everything? I do not have the driver cd for these becuase they are integrated onto the motherboard. Please help I know this is getting to be an old topic but I appreciate the help alot.

No it won't. It only includes drivers for hardware introduced before Windows 98 was released. It sounds like all your problems can be solved by installing drivers. Try AIDA32 to help identify hardware, and locate drivers.

Well thanks for all the help but I thinkit is time to trash this CPU. after trying to locate some drivers I went to boot and windows crashed. I retried and now the system doesn't recognize the hard drive again. it does see the cd drive but that is it. I am puzzled and pretty much ready to quit. I feel as though I am running in circles. Thanks again
