I have ran updated versions of ad-aware, spybot, hijackthis, housecall, (something from computer associates), norton, and a couple of others with no success. I have run and clean in safe mode and had everything looking good but on reboot, it comes back. I looked at an old "good" hijackthis and I noticed I used to have a couple of BHO entries that are now gone. Maybe I deleted them on accident during the last 3 days of battle (probably not good). My system is running fine except I keep getting hijacked to the e-finder pages. I reset my web settings, turned Windows restore function on and off at various times, but nothing works. Here's my log: I appreciate any advice!

You have malware we need to fix, but first you need to apply Windows Critical updates. Without critical updates, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
-or-
Order if you're on dial-up, order a free CD here:
http://www.microsoft...default810.mspx

Please update everything, except SP2. The malware needs to be cleaned up before SP2 is installed.

Post another log after that and we'll get after it!

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Reboot in safe mode (by tapping F8 at startup and select safe mode from the menu). Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following:

C:\Program Files\Support.com\
C:\WINDOWS\dpe.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System\MSMSGSVC.exe

Next, please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

I'm looking good now. I had a some concerns when I rebooted in normal and ran Ad-aware and it found remnants of coolwebsearch. However, I had it fix the problem and rebooted several times since then, ran spybot, ad-aware again, and hijackthis and I think I'm clean. Thanks so much. I'm going to see how I can donate to the cause for your help. I saw a link. I don't have paypal and I don't know the options but I'll investigate. Thanks again!!! Here's my latest log:

I can't believe my paypal account was still active. I set it up probably over a year ago and never used it until today. Thanks again for your help!

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN <_<

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use).

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also CRITICAL to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

Running an anti-virus and keeping it up-to-date is REQUIRED to keep a clean system. If you don't have one or are sick of paying for what you have, AVG offers a great, free anti-virus:

A firewall is also another MUST. If you do not have one or Windows XP Service Pack 2, both Zone Labs and Sygate offer great, free firewalls. I suggest using Zone Alarm for an advanced user or Sygate Personal Firewall for beginner users.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser at all times besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend Firefox (You'll need to use IE only to visit Windows Update).
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder in a couple weeks if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. :D
