I got trojans from a stupid gamesite. I downloaded this tool called trojanhunter and it helped me aleviate that problem nice and easily. But then, I clicked on a link relating to that site, and it infected me yet again of which I believe is the same malware/spyware/trojan.

I ran trojanhunter after and it didnt work out as planned. Just removed files, but didn't delete the mother of all those things...the producer! that's what's keeping these things to come back. I've tried running ad-aware SE 1.06 and it deleted several files, but didn't alleviate the problem, after I saw that it said it found trojans.agent.em and trojans.downloader so I thought I would have those (and some more I didn't know) so now, I'm posting here to see what proper measures can be taken towards fixing this problem (hopefully no money is needed...)

Here is my hjt log:

Hi, no I unfortunately, I haven't fixed it. Here's the copy of the hjt log...but let me tell you...the file that I believe is doing this is changing it's name ...

From reading these boards, it seems that this piece of the log "something/ablahblah.dll/sp.html#1432" is one of the culprits. If you look above and now, you'll see that it's different. A few days ago, that was different too. Geez, do people have more time than code these irratable programs.

Hey Jan Shane :tazz:

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

This will likely be a few step process in removing the malware that has infected your system. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

You have a nasty CoolWebSearch infection. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Run the CleanUp! installer. You dont need to do anything with it right now.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Disconnect from the internet

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Run the below program (About buster) until it doesnt find anything

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run CleanUp!. Click CleanUp and allow it to delete all the temporary files.

Rescan with hijack this and check these if they are present

I'm afraid it's still not done...

edit: whenever I open a new folder, it always pops one of its executables into my processes so yeah....it's really annoying now. Now I can't even get my regular xp themes back after going through safe mode.

Hello Jan Shane ;)

Lets try this again with a few different steps.Just be patient, we'll get it
Dont worry about your Xp themes ,we will get them back after we get rid of this infection :tazz:

Uninstall MessengerPlus3... This comes bundled with adware .You can reinstall without the sponser software after we are done

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure

Update about buster

Update CWshredder

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Disconnect from the internet

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below service:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I)

*note* make sure it is the helper and no other

When you find them, double-click on each one. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Run HiJackThis. Click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (copy and paste):

11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I

Click ok.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES.

Please reboot into safe mode Safe mode(continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).

Using windows explorer( right click start, left click explore)
Search for and delete these files and folders
C:\WINDOWS\system32\addxs32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlme32.exe

Now run About buster( Run it until it doesnt find anything) usually 2 or 3 times

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about

Now run cleanup

Now scan with Ewido and save the log

close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\spkwo.dll/sp.html#14044

It worked! Finally. Thank you for your help loophole. You are the greatest :tazz:

Do I still need to upload the ewido and hjt logs?

Well if I do then I just uploaded them here via text files.

Now, that is all fine and dandy now, how do I get my XP Themes back? (The default ones...such as the blue, silver and olive themes)

Once again...THANK YOU! You are a life saver.

Hey Jan Shane :tazz:

Great. Just fix the below with hijack and we will get your XP themes back

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

O2 - BHO: Class - {825929FA-938D-0933-A4AB-393513D1CAF5} - C:\WINDOWS\d3hc32.dll (file missing)

Next please do this

Open notepad, copy and paste next content (bold) in it:

dir C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Save this as look.bat ,choose to save as *all files and save it to your desktop.
Doubleclick on it and notepad will open with some text in it.
Copy and paste this in your next reply.

ok Let's fix this.

download a copy of luna.msstyles here:
http://users.pandora...patchy/luna.zip

Unzip it and MOVE the luna.msstyles which is present in that folder you unzipped to next folder: C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna
Don't move it to anywhere else than that folder!

When moved it there, rightclick on your desktop > properties ... and look if Windows XPstyle is now present again. Choose apply and OK.

If not, reboot first, and try again to select Windows XPstyle

Good job ;)

your system is clean :tazz:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
