I don't really see much that could be related (other than what I already sent to you when you asked me to look in the Event Viewer previously), but I will list what I found here.

Under Application, the only error I get is the same as I already told you and says: Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x015102fe.

Under Security, I did get the message:

IPSec Services: IPSec Services failed to get the complete list of network interfaces on the machine. This can be a potential security hazard to the machine since some of the network interfaces may not get the protection as desired by the applied IPSec filters. Please run IPSec monitor snap-in to further diagnose the problem.

Under System, the only errors says:

The Computer Browser service terminated with the following error:
This operation returned because the timeout period expired.

The only thing we know about the module that crashes IE is that it is version 0.0.0.0

This could also be a firewall related issue:

Search the System 32 folder for *.dll containing the text 0.0.0.0

Let me know what it comes up with if the patch offered at the first link doesn't work.

I am not exactly sure what to do with the two links you sent to me. I read the content. The first one (IPSEC + Computer Browser) says to contact them for the hotfix, but it was not recommended to use it unless it was a severe problem? What do you recommend on that? Did I read it correctly, because I couldn't find anything on that webpage to download the hotfix. Then I didn't know what to do with the second link you sent.

I did the search you requested (in System 32, with *.dll as the extention and 0.0.0.0 included in the file). This search returned no files/folders.

The point I tried to get across was that I think this problem is related with the Windows firewall.

I would advise to install a (free) software firewall and disable the one built in to XP

A very clever friend of mine (female of course) asked me if we tried this:

With all IE windows closed click Start > Run > in the dialog box type or copy&paste
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll

You should get a prompt stating the file was registered successfully
You might as well repeat that procedure for these files as well:

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll


Let me know if you can normally use the Windows Update site after doing so.

You should always listen to your wise female friends...

I did not do anything dealing with my firewall yet, but I did run the 4 different .dll files you suggested below, and then restarted my computer. After that, I am now able to go to the windowsupdate website on IE and it successfully scanned my computer and let me download updates! Finally, this seemed to work! Can you explain to me what those files are or why they may have fixed the problem?

Also, I am assuming I should still go ahead and deactive the XP firewall and install one of my own. Do you have a suggestion on a firewall to install? I have Norton Internet Security 2005, which says it includes a personal firewall. Do you suggest I install this firewall (and do you suggest I install the Spyware Protection that comes with it?)?

I will thank my friend for you.

mshtml.dll is a module containing HTML-related functions. We suspect it may have been replaced by the spyware.
Registering it installed it back in the place where it belongs.

If you alreadu have NIS, I'd try and see if I liked that first.

I have always been a fan of Sygate (they have a free version) and the old versions of Kerio (but I dopn't like the newer ones that much)
That however is a matter of opinion and you should always get the one you find easy to operate, because that will give you the best security.

Sorry it has been a while...but I have now installed my firewall (from Norton Internet Security), IE lets me use windows updates, my computer lets me search, and as far as I can tell, there are no viruses on my computer!!

Is there anything further I should do to confirm that everything is fixed (run another HijackThis, etc)?

Also, are there any further things you can recommend to prevent problems in the future (now that I have a firewall, have updated windows, and have virus protection from Norton)?
