not reconising hard drive

alot of the files have been deleted off the hard drive via dos but now the hard drive is not being reconised it says that there is no primary slave alough the drive is connected so i cannot install windows without the drive functioning someone please help

you have two drives? how do you have the jumpers set? make sure they are both set to cable select

im no good with the back computers so please can u explain it simpilly

a jumper is a little black (maybe grey) "tab" (not sure the best way to describe it) on the back of the drive. basically when you look at the back of the hard drive you have a bunch of pins where your ide cable attatches. some more pins where the power cable attatches and then some smaller pins with one of those black things in it. there should be somewhere near that either a sticker or etched onto the case of the drive some letters that say
"Mstr" "Slv" "CS" or something to that effect. you want to make sure that that jumper is on the one that says CS
