Ok back to the host file issue, ive done some research on this and found this at support.microsoft.com

o determine if the problem is caused by an entry in the Hosts file, look for Hosts files on the local computer and rename all the Hosts files that are found. To do so, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
2. In the All or part of the file name box, type hosts.
3. In the Look in list, click your hard disk, and then click Search.
4. Click all the Hosts files that are found. If there is more than one, click one Hosts file, and then hold down the CTRL key while you click other Hosts files.
5. Press F2.
6. Type a new name. For example, type oldhosts, and then press ENTER.

Also you may want to try restting winsock.

To be honest im grabing at straws at this point. I have seen this issue quiet frequently at work as of late here with customers and there is no fix for this yet.

To reset winsock do this from the DOS prompt. To get here click start>run> type in command and hit enter. In this black box type the following and hit enter, then restart the PC.

netsh winsock reset catalog

Good luck.

:tazz: One of these worked for me! I'm not sure which since I did them both; it was either renaming the old HOSTS file or resetting the Winsock.

Things that did not work. . .

Run anti-virus and anti-spyware software
Check HOSTS file for improper entries
Use alternate browsers
Turn off firewalls

These suggestions from Microsoft also did not help:

1. Delete Temporary Internet Files
2. Configure Security, Content, and Advanced Settings in Internet Explorer
3. Verify That the Date and Time Settings on Your Computer Are Correct
4. Verify That Your Computer Is Using 128-Bit Encryption
5. Check Third-Party Firewall or Antivirus Programs
6. Use the System File Checker (Sfc.exe) Tool to Verify Protected System Files
7. Verify That the Microsoft Cryptographic Services Service Is Started
8. Register .Dll Files

=============

Change of the MTU packet size to 1492 did not help.

Thanks a million!. I hope this works for the rest of y'all.

Hi all

Sorry but I have been away and haven't been able to follow up on my original post, though I gather that the problem is mostly fixed now, which is good :tazz:

I will just add a little bit about the LMHOSTS thing I mentioned and the winsock issue (which is what the problem was by the sounds of it)

For information only, as far as I have been able to gather under XP the LMHOSTS file doesn't usually exist, it would usually be created by a failure in the computer networking connection system to enable local machines to still be able to reach websites if the remote WINS servers fail for some reason, it is also created by ADWARE/MALWARE virii etc for malicious purposes, eg a virus may enable a lmhosts file and put in virus removal websites such as symantec or microsoft so an infected machines user can't get to their websites for help in fixing it. To all intents and purposes the file is normally redundant and can be either renamed or deleted without any adverse affects.

The WINSOCK thing, again as cnmsales said, basically just needs resetting, it can become corrupted due a problem on the machine or as is most likely in this case, by a malicious MALWARE program, again because it is a core networking component for TCP/IP any problems with it would cause a loss of connectivity.

Anyway glad you are back up and running and once again sorry for the delay in posting!

I am yelling here because this is my darn thread everybody keeps jumping on!!!

I am glad ya'll got your systems working. I, for one, and the only one I care about, has not.

Cmnsales,

I am absolutely grateful for the work you have been doing with me. It sucks that this is a common problem and it hasn't been figured out yet.

I have renamed the LMHOST files to oldhost and it hasn't done anything.
I have reset the winsock catalog and it hasn't done anything.

I would just forget about it, but darnit I got a business to run and can't accept the time it takes to redo things just because I can't get to their website.

Ok, id like to try a few things if we can.

#1 Id like to know if your pc connects directly or is it behind a router?

I actually dont know what kind of connection you have. Are you on dial up dsl or cable?

If you are on high speed and using a router id like to see you bypass this router and have your connection hooked directly to your pc. If you do this and it fixes the problem then there is an issue with the router.

If it does not fix the problem id like to see you connect your pc to another connection, be it at a friends house or a dial up account a friend could let you set up on your pc and try out at home.

Finally I really think the issue is something on your PC. At this point being you have had virus activity and now this if it were up to me and it were my PC I would be inclined to format my hard drive and reinstall windows. Im sorry but I am absolutely out of ideas.

Good luck. If you find out any more info please post it as it may generate a new idea in my brain.

Check your Internet history . . . . cnmsales I think was on right trail . . .

Appears that a lot of your pages are expired/obsolete/timed-out

This stays in your history & even though . . . .you type in a new "line"
the browser . . . "to be quick???" will be bullheaded & keep trying the last page, (which is in your computer) & will add it everytime.

So are you sure:

you cleaned your history??? Click on it & pull down history menu . . . .& click on a page that was a problem & see where it takes you . . . . probably to an expired page. . . .& it probably is a secured web site . . . . . (that is why it is labled secured)

Just passing along my experience . . . .deleting/cleaning temp internet folders may be hard to do after having a virus . . . . .

The problem is not solved until you get to the: "Root Cause"
If you do not have a secure firewall . . . .your still in danger. . . .
. . . .everytime you get online. . . .

And the problem is: To get antivirus software/fixes . . .you must get on line. . so it can be a catch 22 . . . Get secured first . . .then get healed..

Also if your antivirus fixes removed an appllication called "backweb" - not sure but it appears to be an internet speed-up utility. . . that may be vulnerable to spyware/malware . . .

After reading thru all these posts . . .looks like you it is still related to your virus problem

Suggest you read similar post/threads relating such as

Can't connect to certian websites or programs elyk371 Jul 9 2005, 05:54 PM

Good Luck

Jamica,
I see that you appear to have implemented all of the suggestions, with the possible exception of renaming "HOSTS" file to "oldhosts". I see that you did rename "LMHOSTS.sam", but that seems to apply to Local Area Networks (LAN) and would not be the same.

If you have indeed missed that one, remember, when searching for the "HOSTS" file, be sure to use "Advanced Search Options"; search 'System folders', 'hidden files and folders', and 'search subfolders'.

I'm the guy who butted in earlier to say that either the advice about the "HOST" file or the winsock catalog resolved my problem.

Here's hoping
Rick.

p.s. I really liked the buttons.

====================
Here is a summary extracted from Jamica's posts that I studied and so no unabiguous mention of fixing HOSTS file.
====================

deliriumcolor (Jamica)

Windows XP, SP2
McAffees, but only virus alert.
Windows XP firewall
MSIE Browser, and Firefox.
Malware is 'Search And Destroy'.

The only problem is in accessing some websites. Can access hotmail.com, but not personal account. Gets browser error: 'cannot find page', or 'cannot find that server'.

Problem websites are:
www.beadedimages.com, www.buttonshoppe.com, hotmail account, and others.

Was able to access those sites before getting virus and trojan. Viruses removed but still unble to access those sites. (Do not have access to another computer.)

Pinged the sites mentioned above but the request timed out, the same with http://64.82.100.25 (Mindspring Web Services).

Only new programs downloaded are those to resovle this problem.

---------------------

SUGGESTIONS THAT JAMICA HAS IMPLEMENTED:

"HijackThis.com"

Antivirus and anti-sypyware programs.

Advice from 'cnmsales'...

Internet options in the control panel:
- Delete temp files, cookies, and clear history.
- Set security and privacy down to default level.
- Clear SSL state.
- Reset Advanced tab to defaults.

- Renamed the LMHOST files to oldhost and it hasn't done anything.

- Reset winsock (cmd: netsh winsock reset catalog)

- "Proxies enabled" option - unchecked.

-- end --
