Uncompressing a Win 98 file on XP

Hello out there you geek-heros,

On my old computer I did a backup of some of my files by compressing them (Win 98)

On Win XP it cannot uncompress the disk. Says only Win98 can do this. Have I really lost those files? None of my geek friends are using Win 98.

how did you compress your data? did you use a particular software?
