Hi folks --
Thanks so much for being there. I've done all the prerequired stuff that I could -- AdAware, Spybot, CleanUp (wow, THAT was amazing!) -- and I'm not sure whether I've got all bugs out. I've had Windows SP2 installed for a long time; in fact, it's entirely likely that it was installed while there was malware on my box. I wasn't sure whether that meant I should or should not download SP1a, so that is the one prerequisite I haven't done.

My main problem, as far as I can tell, is that I seem to be running too many processes (according to Task Mgr), and CPU usage bounces all over the map, from 2% to 48% to 1% to 100%, even just after I've rebooted and I've got no apps running. What IS that? Also, a while back, I was trying to change from comcast to verizon dsl, but I kept getting redirected to the wrong ISP. I'm not sure if that issue's been fixed or not, or how to test. I do know that Explorer seemed reluctant to let me get to your page earlier, and I came here through AOL (go figure). This seems better since I jumped through the AdAware/Spybot hoops -- I'm here through Explorer this time.

I'm more familiar with the Mac platform, so all this PC struggle is sort of an alien universe to me, and I really appreciate your help. -- Tina

I should add that this morning I tried to download that SP1a thing, but I couldn't get to the webpage. So I don't know if I have it in the first place or not.

Actually, you did a really good job of cleaning your computer up. There's very little that I'd recommend getting rid of. That being said...

You may want to print these instructions out since the internet may not be accessible throughout the length of the fix.

First, run HijackThis and close any other windows that may be open. Place a check next to the following items in bold:

Make sure that you visually double-check that only those entries are checked and click Fix.

Now, Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now, let’s remove some of the offending programs… go to Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs.

Find the following programs and remove them (if they exist):

MyWay Search Bar

Then, using Windows Explorer, navigate to and delete the following folder:

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\

Reboot into normal mode. Run HijackThis again, and post a new log here.

Two things -- One of the HJT log items, the second R1 thing, didn't exactly match the one in my log that looked most like it, which was this:

vs. the one that appeared in my log, which I didn't delete because it wasn't same:

Should I run HJT again and delete that one?

The other thing is maybe just a question -- I thought it might be good to empty the recycle bin and opened Help & Support to try and do so just before I rebooted, and my computer seized up, so I just pushed the big bad button and went ahead and rebooted in normal mode as instructed. Was that okay?

Actually, there's a 3rd thing -- in Add & Remove, the MyWay thing showed up as MyWay Search Assistant, not Bar, as you listed, but I did remove that one. Are they the same?

1) Yes, if I were you, I'd rerun HijackThis and take off that value. Thanks for asking first, it's much better to be safe than it is to guess.

2) I'd never say it's a good thing for the computer to crash, but my rule of thumb is if this hasn't happened before and doesn't happen again, it's probably just a blip. If it's a consistant problem, then it most definitely something that needs to be looked at.

3) I wasn't aware MyWay was listed like that. I'll have to make a note of that. But, yes, MyWay = bad.

First, to answer your question... there isn't a "normal" number. You have several programs running that run tons of processes (Symantec and AOL to be specfic)... they probably account for a dozen processes between the two. That's not a bad thing, per se, but it can be worrying. On my computer right now, I have 47 processes going and I'm almost certain mine is malware free. So, you don't seem to be all that high.

As for CPU usage... that depends quite a bit on the CPU, but it shouldn't ever be running over, let's say, 50% for very long (with exceptions being during virus scans, etc.). It's normal to have it spike to 100% for a second when you open a program or something to that effect, but it should come back down. My personal theory is that under normal conditions (nothing major running) my System Idle Process should have the biggest number. As long as that's the case, I don't worry much.

In the future, here are some suggestions to keep your computer more secure:

Use a firewall - If you’re on a broadband connection, this shouldn’t even be an option. You can get a good, FREE firewall from ZoneLabs called ZoneAlarm here.

Make sure that you keep Windows up to date - Microsoft is constantly releasing updates to plug holes in their OS. It’s a good idea to take advantage of these as frequently as possible. As a matter of fact, if you’re lazy like me you can set Automatic Updates by right clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties . Then click the Automatic Updates tab, then click the Automatic radio button then click OK.

Make sure you have an up-to-date virus scanner – This is super important. Heck, it typically doesn’t even matter which one that you use… just pick one and keep it updated. A free virus scanner can be had from Grisoft, called AVG. Get it here.

You can also get a more secure browser – Not a necessity at all, but most exploits are manufactured to attack Internet Explorer. For the time being, browsers such as Opera and Firefox aren’t nearly as exploitable… yet.

Practice safe browsing – Just some run of the mill things to keep you safer. Don’t open email attachments even from people you know unless you know the attachment is coming. Try to stay to larger websites… it’s the smaller… less public ones that typically give you trouble (*this isn’t to say NEVER go there, just minimize it*). Also, try to stay legal: warez (stolen software) and file sharing apps (Kazaa, Torrents) tend to have grotesque amounts of spyware associated.
