Hi there.

I recently became infected with both AVGold and PSGuard. I used the removal steps at BleepingComputer.com to remove AVGold, but I am now suffering the hijacking of my desktop due to PSGuard. I ran Ad-Aware with the latest definitions possible as well as Spybot as I do frequently. Ad-Aware came up with 17 objects to be removed using the custom scanning options, and I went ahead and removed them. PSGuard is still present on my system. I have included the following HiJackThis log for review:

Thanks in advance for everything!

Yes at this time I still need a bit of help with this problem. A new problem that has developed as well is infection from the Sasser Virus, but the delay hasn't bothered me too bad because I've been away from home on vacation.

Any assistance would be appreciated

Sincerely,

Xavier

Hi, sorry for the delay, but I was still away from my home computer when I responded. Here's a quick rundown of my issues as they currently sit:

My desktop is still hijacked and PSGuard still appears, even though Spybot Search and Destroy seems to have removed PSGuard with the latest updates I could give it. I also recently updated Ad-Aware as well and both programs have removed over 200 objects combined, although Spybot is having some difficulty with 45 examples of Smitfraud.C that refuse to go away even after multiple restarts.

I can get on the internet just fine, but if I leave the computer alone for approximately five minutes or a set time passes while surfing, the computer locks up and the only way to regain normality is to either pull the power cord or hold in the power button. Pretty annoying as it happens 100% of the time I go online. ;)

I am having issues with a variant of the Sasser Worm, although my RPCs are all set to take no action.

As requested, here is the most recent HiJack This log as of approximately 10 minutes ago:

Please SAVE THIS PAGE or secure a PRINT COPY of the instructions for reference.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
Do NOT run it yet.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite 3.5 here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Do NOT run the scan yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
(How to boot in Safe Mode...)
===================================================
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Be sure to View Hidden and System Files.

Through Windows Explorer, delete the following folder(s) or files(s) if they exist (in bold):
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuamk0p32.exe
  • C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll
Finally, Empty Recycle Bin

Let us know if any problems persist.

Please tell me how is everything running, are there any differences before the fixes and after the fixes?

Please let me know what further steps are needed. I had to reinstall windows as we suffered a power outage during the download of Service Pack 2 for XP and as a result, I was unable to access any programs as I received a .dll or .exe missing error. :tazz:

Had you already re-installed your Win OS? Are these log results taken from a fresh new OS?

Be sure to View Hidden and System Files.

Can you do a search through find files or folders for wininet.dll

then copy it to this location:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\

Open the SmitRem folder then run the Runthis.bat again. Save the results then post it.

Download these tools:
* rdrivRem.zip
  • Unzip it to your desktop. Do NOT run it yet.
* CleanUp!
  • Install it. Do NOT run it yet.
Reboot in SAFE MODE. (How to boot in Safe Mode...)

Be sure to View Hidden and System Files.

Through Windows Explorer, delete the following folder(s) or files(s) if they exist (in bold):
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\winssh.exe
Finally, Empty Recycle Bin

1.) Please double-click rdrivRem.bat to run the program - follow the instructions on the screen. After it's complete, rdriv.txt will be created in the rdrivRem folder.

2.) Double-click the Ewido Security Suite icon to run the program.
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "clean", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Exit Ewido
Please close all remaining windows, disconnect from the internet, open HijackThis then click SCAN. Please put a check on the following items listed below:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Network Access] winssh.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Network Access] winssh.exe

Make sure to double check the items you have selected, then click Fix Checked.

3.) Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Close to reboot it.

After computer has restarted continue with the rest of the instructions:

6.) Make sure your firewall is on. Make sure you can turn it off then turn it back on and that nothing is greyed out.
Also, Make sure your Anti-Virus program is working properly - you can turn on and off auto-protect, etc.

7.) Run BOTH of these online virus scans (NOT at the same time!):
ActiveScan
TrendMicro's HouseCall - check "Auto Clean"

Save the results from ActiveScan.

I need you to post the contents of rdriv.txt, the log from Ewido, the log from ActiveScan, and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

I have already reinstalled XP, however my manufacturer (Dell)-supplied reinstallation CD allowed me to reinstall it without deleting any files. This has removed the constant .dll or .exe file missing message, although I cannot access my Media Player due to a message that states "There was an internal application error" :tazz:

The logs that were posted were taken after the XP re-installation and were done with the programs run in Safe Mode.

I have already downloaded and installed CleanUp and will follow your instructions when I get home from work tonight and will post new logs ASAP.

put your Win XP CD in the CD-ROM drive then:
START > RUN > sfc > then click the start button to begin replacement of corrupted files.

You need to update all latest patches from Windows Updates. :tazz:

Very good you did a great job! Just a couple more of cleanups! :tazz:

Click HERE to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

Select "Delete on Reboot".

Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\P2P Networking v126.cpl
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\rdriv.sys
C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\WildApp.inf
C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\ysbactivex.inf
C:\WINDOWS\BROWSERXTRAS\PN\remove.exe
C:\WINDOWS\delprot.ini
C:\WINDOWS\switchagreement.txt
C:\Documents and Settings\Xavier\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\archive.jar-4235d44a-68c75bf4.zip
C:\Program Files\Common Files\SearchUpgrader\system.cfg
C:\WINDOWS\aim.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mxpsp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msdirectx.sys

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Restart in SAFE MODE and Run those files through Killbox once more to be sure nothing survived.

This time place a tick by any of these selections available

"Standard File Kill"
"End Explorer Shell while Killing File"
"Unregister .dll before Deleting"

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.
