sony dvdrom wont work

Yesterday, I was using my Sony DVD/ROM to play a game. This AM I tried to again and was given an error message of insert disc and try again. I did. Same result. After fiddling around for awhile I discovered that while I have power to the drive. it isn't showing up in my device manager or under My Computer. It's like it isnt there!
We just rebuilt the rig 2 days ago and this DVD/ROM is only 2.5 yo.
I believe it's a Sony DVD/ROM DDV1 from what I could tell by going into bios. I didn't want to screw around in there because I'm fairly new about computer troubleshooting. HELP!
