[Uhhlyssa]

I keep getting that AVG is finding a Virus called Trojan Alwayup.
This is happening more than once a day and it cannot be healed.
I have gone to your beginning page and completed all required steps before posting this topic. When I did my scans I didn't see anything that looked like it would be related to the one I was looking for (though I did find some interesting junk hiding around)
I have also looked at previous threads regarding this--please do not redirect me there. ---i got utterly confused
After rebooting I ran AVG again and it didn't find anything.
I just want to make sure it is gone and get an "OK" from someone a bit more knowledgable than I.

I noticed that your HiJackthis.exe is located on your desktop, make sure to save HijackThis in its own folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This is very important, so HiJackThis can save backups!

I don't see a heck of a lot, but I do want to check out one file.

Please go here and upload

then please post the results in your next reply.

1. Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

2. Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs:

Viewpoint Manager <======This is an advertising program by Viewpoint. This process monitors your browsing habits and distributes the data back to the author's.

3. Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

Hi Excal. The reason my HJT log is on the desktop is because I have no clue how to give it it's own folder I played around and tried to figure it out myself and came up short. I can do everything else though. I have deleted Viewpoint and scanned Trillian (That is an IM if you didn't know already)

Please let me know how to put HJT into a C:\ folder and I will be good to go.

How to make a permanent folder:

Click "My Computer", then "C:\" and then on "Program Files".
In the menu bar, "File"->"New"->"Folder".
That will create a folder named "New Folder", which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have "C:\Program Files\HijackThis". Put your HijackThis.exe there.


I know that Trillian is an IM, but there has been cases where it gets infected and I just wanted to make sure it wasn't

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".


The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if the main link does not work) and install it.


Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.


Reboot

• Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
• Save it to the desktop.
• Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
• You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
• Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.
  
  
• NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
  For some time it will look like nothing is happening. Just keep waiting.
  
• Once it's done it will create a log. A window will come up telling you when it's saved. Please post that log here

Does AVG list a file? Or does it just say it found the trojan?

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Download WinPFind and extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder.
don't do anything with it yet.


THE FIX

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Open up and run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
• When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

5. Inside c:\WinPFind is a file called WinPFind.exe. Double-click on this file to launch the program. Once it is launched, click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish. This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.

Please post the winpfind log and the ewido log.

I have been working on this thing so long that my Ewido trial has expired.

When I first began trying to get rid of it, I followed the instructions on the "Read me first" post, downloaded it and ran it.

It expired yesterday

Is there an alternative Security Suite I could use?

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):

• Click the "Free Trial" link on the right - next to "SpySweeper for Home Computers" to download the program.
• Install it.
• When you open the program, it will prompt you to update to the latest definitions.
• Please do so, then click "Sweep Now".
• Click the "Start" button.
• When it's done scanning, click the "Next" button.
• Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the "Next" button.
• It will remove all of the items found.
• Click "Session Log" in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
• Click the Summary tab and click "Finish".

Run it in safe mode, just like the ewido.

OOOOOOOOk

For some reason my comp won't let me choose to run in safe mode.

I did the restart and pressed F8 --I got the black and white screen that had the option (kinda at the top) to run in safe mode.

The instructions were to use my arrow keys to move the highlighted bar up and down to choose what i wanted to do.

NO MOVING

I tried to do it in 3 minute increments-(up to 15 min)-I thought maybe the computer needed a little time to do whatever

Am I doing something wrong?

Restart, Press F8 repeatedly until you get the screen (black background, white letters) where the option for start in safe mode.

I am going to get the hammer.................
