This past weekend while browsing the internet I encountered a problem with an app or prog installing itself on my PC. Every attempt I made at trying to halt it was ignored. Upon going to the add/remove programs dialogue I found several programs there I was not aware of, namely The ABI Network and something called
Windows AFA Internet Enhancement. Upon trying to delete them, they continually found means to reinstall themselves. Internet browsing became impossible due to the barrage of pop-ups. After doing some research I came upon your website and followed your instructions using the spyware tools you recommended and am now ready to post my Hijack This log. Before I post I would like to note that after numerous attempts with Ewido Security Suite on all but one attempt the prog would close itself due to an error at about 98-99% completion. I am hopeful that your staff can assist me in resolving my problems before I resort to reformatting. I just got this PC up and running with this HD a month ago. Thank you and here is the HJT log:

Thank you very much for your help Excal but upon trying to update my OS with SP1a and further I discovered a problem. For unmentioned reasons of which I'm sure you are aware or either can guess I am unable to update. It looks like I'll be asking for a refund of the money I paid for the friend to install and format my new hard drive. I have decided to just start with a clean format and avoid the typical "Oh, I can fix it for you, and cheap" comments from friends. Your help was appreciated and received well. In the future I have found what appears to be a great site for technical when I have problems. In researching your pages I learned of several spyware tools, etc that I plan on utilizing upon reformatting. Thanks once again.

when you do format, check out some of these tools that are free to use and very effective.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware


If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir


The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Thanks for the info....I have most the progs you mentioned or suggested already or in response to the research from your website. I use Norton System Works as far as AV protection and utilities, I plan on switching to Firefox as I've had a good friend trying to convert me over for a couple of months (now I'm convinced), and as far as firewalls are concerned I've been told XP has its own. Is it not sufficient? If not I have it available to me to use the firewall protection built into my DSL modem. Thanks again.......

I would not recommend using the XP firewall. I would use one of the ones I suggested. Its a good back up to the one you have on your router.
