good video splitting programs?

i have some long avis, wmvs, mpgs, etc.. and i want to take sections out of them and save them as their own files. i have tried using Easy Video Splitter, but it does not sync up the sound properly. any recommendations?

i have heard tell of a wonderfull program named Pinnacle studio or something like that....i have never used it or seen it in action but a friend of mine made a great movie of his trip to europe with it and compiled it into a proffessional looking dvd
