We will fix the Wild Tangent thing later.

First please run EWIDO as described below and post both the EWIDO log and a fresh HJT log.

Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.
    • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
      • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
      • Click on Start
      • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    • Once the updates are installed do the following:
      • REBOOT into Safe Mode
      • Run EWIDO
      • Click on scanner
      • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:[list]
      • Binder
      • Crypter
      • Archives
    • Click on Start Scan
    • Let the program scan the machine
    • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
    • Click Save report
    • Save the report to your desktop
  • Reboot your machine and post back a new HJT log and the ewido .txt log file you saved by using Add Reply

i can't seem to open ewido in safe mode. it opens a little bar in the lower left corner of the screen (as if the program were opened and minimized) but the program will not open.

Ive rebooted a few times.

OK -- sorry it's taken so long -- it seems to take me twenty minutes to reboot every time I try to do it. I uninstalled emido and reinstalled it because it wouldn't open.

We are going to do some extensive housecleaning. Hold on to your hat.

1. We want to stop, disable and delete an added service (023)

A. To stop a service and set to 'disabled'
  • Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK
  • Click the Extended tab.
  • Scroll down until you find the service.
    ===>Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc)
  • Click once on the service to highlight it.
  • Click Stop
  • Right-Click on the service.
  • Click on 'Properties'
  • Select the 'General' tab
  • Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box
  • From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'
  • Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'
The service is now stopped and disabled.


2. Now repeat the exact same procedures with this service:

Service: Netbios Helper Service


3. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Please RUN HijackThis.

1. We want to stop, disable and delete an added service (023)

A. To stop a service and set to 'disabled'
  • Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK
  • Click the Extended tab.
  • Scroll down until you find the service.

    Service: Network DDE Connections (NETDDEC)
  • Click once on the service to highlight it.
  • Click Stop
  • Right-Click on the service.
  • Click on 'Properties'
  • Select the 'General' tab
  • Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box
  • From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'
  • Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'
The service is now stopped and disabled.

2. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following
items:

The first Hijack itrem you mentioned was there -- but I do not see the one --

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.


3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.


Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Thank you so much for everything. I have three additional questions (which may be related).

1. As part of the fixing process I reenabled some startup items that I don't use.

-- MusicMatch Jukebox (I never use this)
-- McAffee Security Center -- I haven't used this in months -- i would like to get a new antivirus program recommended by this site

Should I just disable them in MSconfig or should I uninstall them?

2. My computer takes about 10 minutes to reboot. It started slowing down about two months ago and seems to be getting slower and slower to reboot. It seems to take a long time to load windows -- can I speed things up?

3. Has anyone invented a program that prevents programs from loading themselves into the startup file without express permission -- in general it seems like I have a lot of programs running that -- while I sometimes use them -- like AOL IM, don't need to always load up every time I turn on the computer.

1. Always UNINSTALL the programs then DELETE them through WINDOWS EXPLORER.

2. I can't push one product over another but what I can say is that recently I did a mini sampling of some of the experts on a couple of sites and these were their findings.

a. FREE AV: AVG7
b. Pay for: Kaspersky (a little resource hungry but very effective)
NOD32 (Very good to Excellent in all fields)

3. My computer takes an eternity to startup and to close also. I run a lot of "protection"-type applications. You just have to live with it.

4. You often have the choice upon installation as to whether you want a program to run at startup or not. When you do, choose no, if applicable. When you don't have a choice, one of the ways to use is exactly what you are doing now and that works.
