I have done everything suggested and cannot get rid of it. I am rather a novice at this and McAfee is no help. I thought I got rid of it with Ewido and Spybot S&D but every time I boot Explore immediately loads and entries are made in registery such as about:blank, and later McAfee tells me I have a virus and to run scan. It picks up lots of pups but deleting them is temporary. What do I do? Please have patience with me, I am not real good at this stuff. Thanks.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.


You are running HijackThis from a temporary directory or your Desktop. It needs to be in a permanent folder. Please go into Windows Explorer, click on C:\ then click on File > New > Folder and call it HJK , or another name of your choice. The program creates backup files that we may need to use later.

Thanks. Here is the Log. Interestingly during the process McAfee updated itself and since I had forgotten to show hidden files I rebooted normally and McAfee found the "Generic Downloader.f" trojan. I let it scan and delete 2700 files, then had to disable the [bleep] program to do anything else. It goes into an endless loop of notification and scanning, even though it deleted the files. I ran Ewiedo, Spybot S&D and Adware SE and all seems well.

Congratulations, your log is clean.

Although I’m a little concerned by the comments you made about the MacAfee scans. Has MacAfee detected anything since you completed the steps above?



let's clean your restore points and set a new one: (MacAfee may be detecting viruses/trojans in your old restore points)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.


Like I said, please let me know if MacAfee is still detecting anything. You also mentioned running Ewido, did that log came back clean? If not and you saved the scan log, post that if you would.

4SG McAfee has detected nothing since it cleaned the Generic Downloader.f trojan. I have had system restore off since I was infected by the StartPage-DU trojan. It was off when I rebooted. Since McAfee had just updated itself while I was following your instructions. I assume it found a trojan that was left on the computer and not found by the other programs??? McAfee has nothing in its in its file when you click on the trojan name..yet at least. I will turn it on and set a restore point. Should I leave system restore on, or off? BTW Ewido found two minor files which it deleted. I ran it after the McAfee scan.

I would definitely turn System Restore On now and leave it on. The common thought is that a corrupt restore point is better than none at all. Any time we confirm that a log is clean, we instruct the user to delete the old ones and create a new one.


The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annihilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
  • Weather Watcher - Free taskbar weather program that is free, malware free, and resource light.

4GS: Thanks loads. One more question. Why is About:blank listed in the use Blank on my IE StartPage tool. Was the virus named after About:blank or is it a link to the About Webpage and should be removed, and if so how?

Actually that’s normal.

The Use Blank button will set your home page to about:blank. The advantage of about:blank is that Internet Explorer will open quickly, and will not try to connect to the internet, even if your current connection setting is "always dial my default connection."  - Microsoft

4SG: Thanks for all your help. You guys are better than McAfee, and for free. Sometimes I wonder if it is worth the money to buy McAfee if you have to send them money to fix a virus or elimate a trojan that IMO should have been delt with by the program and updates.
