Hi!

I would like to ask your help against the malware attack reached my computer. Thank you for your help

The problems:

- AVgold
- Messages with "your computer is infected"
- Homepage hijacked by oneclicksearch
- Background set to web surface with "message": I am infected

I have:

XP sp1 with Internet Explorer

I tried:

- First online virus scans, AdAware
- Then the process you advise to do first: cleanup, adaware, cws, spybot, exido, tds3 trend online scan, panda online scan
- I turned off the reboot system restore
- Tried running these (offline) anti-malware programs in safe mode

Now:

- AdAware found Coolweb things
- Spybot finds AVgold registry entry after every reboot
- I made the hjt scan and here is the log:

Please SAVE THIS PAGE or secure a PRINT COPY of the instructions. Make this as your reference.

You are advised to temporarily DISABLE the following Protection Programs:
  • Spybot S&D - Tea Timer
  • Ewido Guard
(Note: We will re-ENABLE them later after your system is all clean and malware free.)

Please download all the recommended programs but do NOT run the scans yet, we will perform them later.

1.) Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

2.) Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

3.) Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

4.) Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

5.) If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run the scan yet!
===================================================
Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:
(How to boot in Safe Mode...)
===================================================
We will now fix the remaining problems with HijackThis. Please close all remaining windows, disconnect from the internet, open HijackThis then click SCAN. Please put a check on the following items listed below:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.oneclicks...earch.php?qq=%1

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSGuard] C:\Program Files\PSGuard\PSGuard.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Intel system tool] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hookdump.exe

Make sure to double check the items you have selected,then click Fix Checked.
===================================================

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.
===================================================
  • Uninstallation
    We need to uninstall the following programs:
  • Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
  • Please locate if they exist
    • PS Guard
  • Click Uninstall
  • Confirm with OK
Be sure to View Hidden and System Files.

Through Windows Explorer, delete the following folder(s) or files(s) if they exist (in bold):
  • C:\WINDOWS\System32\intel32.exe
  • C:\Program Files\PSGuard
  • C:\WINDOWS\System32\hookdump.exe
  • C:\WINDOWS\System32\msole32.exe
Finally, Empty Recycle Bin

Now run CleanUp!. Click CleanUp and allow it to delete all the temporary files. Reboot your computer into normal windows.
===================================================
In Normal Mode: Click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Hi!

First of all thank you for your help.

I did what you told me. But in the safe mode, the hjt saw none of the R1 lines with the onesearchclick. I also did notfind some of the files I should have deleted.

What should I do further?

I saved all the logs:

The infection in is still present and coming back, let us first apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP, or Service Pack 4 if you are running Win2k. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection.
Click here
Apply the update then reboot.

==================================
Another link for sp1a:
http://www.softpedia...Pack-SP1a.shtml
==================================
Another is your Ad-Aware seems to be outdated, the latest version is ver.1.06r. Uninstall your old Ad-Aware then please download and install the latest
[ Ad-Aware 1.06 ].

1. Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan
2. Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE
3. Click on the ‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window
5. Then follow the setup here: Ad-Aware SE Setup
6. Do NOT run the scan yet. Close Ad-Aware.
==================================
  • Close all windows, open HijackThis then SCAN.
  • Post a NEW HijackThis Log.
  • Please tell me how your system is working now.

Hi!

I tried the windows updates but the sp1 update was not succesful.

The computer works much better, there are no obvious signs of malware, only the scans tell me that they are still here. The popup signs that my computer is infected are gone.

The latest hjt log:

No, it was made in normal mode. I checked the former hjt logs, and I did not really have more running processes. What do you miss? Just for sure, here is the latest.

Please SAVE THIS PAGE or secure a PRINT COPY of the instructions for reference.

The SmitRem has been updated to 2.1:
Download the latest version smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

===================================================

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel again then click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

hi!

My computer is defintely working better, but actually there is no virus scan without finding some viruses. The normal mode hjt still sees the oneclicksearch and the hookdump.exe. Can I do something against that? Can I fix with the hjt in normal mode? Would it help?

My latest logs are here:

Oh boy! you are indeed re-infected! It will just keep on coming back without the Win XP sp1a or sp2

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP, or Service Pack 4 if you are running Win2k. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Click here
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Thank you very much for your help. I will try to do the update, and run all the malware removal programs to clean up totally.

I will write again if the problems are still coming.

Thank you again,

Hi!

Unfortunately I have some difficulties with updating my xp to sp1 because of the legal policy of Microsoft :tazz: but the arguement that my computer would be much safer makes me reconsider if I have enough funds to solve this problem.

Anyway the computer works really well, it is not slow, the internet works, and there are no hijack attacks or other things. I suppose that that not just these kind of malware programs cause problems, but ohters which just hide on my computer.

I honestly thank you and also all the geekstogo team!
