Hello!

I have made the registry changes that Norton suggests for the Trojan.cachecachekit malware and ran all of your suggested scans, but the "rdriv.sys" file keeps creating itself upon reboot, and keeps changing the registry values back. I would also be interested in knowing if anything else in my registry scans look suspicious. Here is my Hijackthis log as well as my Ewido log. Thanks a ton for your help!!!

Incidently, Norton warned me that www.geekstogo.com had tried to attack my computer using "HTTP Netscape Cookie Monster," and I would be interested to hear why that happened.

Hi and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.


You have a few trojans showing in your log. But I see also that you use msconfig to control your startup items. Please run msconfig again and enable all startup items. That way I can see everything that runs at startup and get a clearer picture of any malware that is set to load at startup. When you have done that, reboot and post a new hijackthis log.


I can't answer exactly why Norton chose to alarm you in such a way when you visit this site. Depending on the settings that you selected when you registered here, cookies are used for a variety of helpful reasons. A cookie will allow this site to remember you when come back so you don't have to log in every time. As most cookies are harmless you may want to review the settings on Norton to see if they are really set the way you want them to be.

Hello Sam,

I fixed all the entries in HTJ except the last one (O23 - Service: Local Security Authority System Service (Local Security Authority System) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\lsass.exe), which initially wasn’t showing up when I did a HJT scan. Eventually, I got a windows security pop-up telling me that Isass was attempting to access the internet, and then the HJT entry was present when I scanned. It did not disappear, however, and this is my new HJT log:

Incidently, neither of the files you recommended I delete were present on the computer. I do get a message that services.exe is trying to access the internet, and windows says it’s a low risk; should I allow it?

Also, Norton is still finding rdriv.sys.

Sorry...quick update. Actually, it appears that rdriv.sys is gone; neither a manual search nor Norton found it. But I am pretty sure its registry changes are still in effect.

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in Internet Explorer, it's "Save Target As") in order to download the fixrdriv.reg file. Save it to your deskop.

Locate fixrdriv.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.


Reboot and post a new hijackthis log. Let me know if Norton is still picking up on rdriv.sys

Norton is no longer finding rdriv.sys!

Are there some regestry changes I should manually make that rdriv.sys created? Any final steps to take to purge any remaining malware?

Your log looks pretty good. There's just the bad service that still shows up that I'd like to get rid of.

Click Start -> Run -> (type) services.msc

Scroll down and find the service called lsass When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.


Run Hijackthis and click on Open the Misc Tools section -> Delete an NT Service
Copy and paste this into the text box and click OK.

Local Security Authority System Service



Reboot and post a new hijackthis log. The reg file that you used in my last instructions should have removed any registy entries from rdriv.sys

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
