Sam,
Back from vacation. ;)
Annoying little trojan :tazz:
Every time I tried to delete according to the instructions with the APT program, it would replace itself with another randomfile.exe before I could delete from my system 32 file.
I tried all 9 kill modes on the resistant little bug, for what it was worth, but kept seeing something pop up to take its place. I went through the rest of the steps, rebooted, and ran hijackthis just to find that there was still a randomfile.exe r file hidden. At any rate, I went reverse order...deleted from system 32 just before hitting the "Kill3" from APT and that seemed to work.
The ewido scan log from safe mode is from before I did the last kill.
The hijackthis log is from after the last kill attempt.
Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg,

It looks like you got it, but now I see something else just starting to show up.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Use Killbox to delete this file.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\jnbara.exe

Now let's take a look at a couple of new logs.

Please Download the following tools to assist us in removing this infection!
  • Download WinPFind
    • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
    • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
    • Dont do anything with it yet!
  • Download Track qoo
    • Save it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
Reboot into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
  • Once the Scan is Complete
  • Go to the WinPFind folder
  • Locate WinPFind.txt
  • Place those results in the next post!
Reboot back to Normal Mode!

Double Click on "Track qoo.vbs"

Note - If you Antivirus has Script Blocking, you will get a Pop Up Windows asking you what to do. Allow this Entire Script to Run, its harmless!

Wait a few seconds and a notepad page will pop up, Copy & Paste those results and place them in the next post along with the results of WinPFind!

Sam,
Okay, done as directed. Here are the two logs...I threw on a hijackthis log just in case you needed one. Can't seem to get rid of jnbara.exe, whatever that might be.
Hope your time away is/was productive.
Thanks,
Greg

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hi Greg,

I appreciate your patience while I was gone. :tazz:

One of the experts here at GTG has requested to see a certain log from your computer in hopes that it will offer up some clues to fixing this type of infection easier in the future. Before we proceed with your fix can you run a program called Silent Runners and post the log here? Here's the instructions and download link for it.

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE to download Silent Runner's.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Now let's go ahead and proceed with your fix.

Open Notepad, and copy everything in the code box below and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fixme.reg on your Desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above "REGEDIT4"!

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\fyxtngqg]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{cbc450ab-3f9a-4745-9039-acaea6414491}]

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run]
" ommbk.exe"=-

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.

================

Download the Pocket Killbox.

Unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to a convenient location and then double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.
  • Highlight the lines below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard:

    • C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\datadx.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dshjgfl.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Fkdxhtk1.xml
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jaaon.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\abiuninst.htm
      C:\WINDOWS\odbyjoyemip.exe
      C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Sskknwrd.dll
      C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\naip.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\kyrnel32.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\ngdsapi.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\System32\jnbara.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system\ommbk.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\System32\conres.cpl

  • Now go to the Killbox application and click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard menu item. In the Full Path of File to Delete box you should see the first file. If you dropdown that box you should see the rest of them. Make sure that they are all there.
  • Click on the Delete on Reboot option and then click on the red circle with a white 'X' in to to delete the files. Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES. When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES. If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.
Your system will reboot now.

=============

After reboot, please post a new hijackthis log and a new log from WinPFind.

Thanks again. Done as requested. Logs to follow.
I had the DSL connected all weekend...don't know if that's a bad thing, but I do know that I can't seem to get rid of that jnbara.exe file even thought we've tried about 20 times, so I assume it's not something I want. Happy malware hunting. :tazz:

Thanks, Sam. I tried something a bit different. Today I logged in as my wife. Her desktop, every few seconds, keeps getting a Spyware doctor alert that says "Access violation at address 03724B4D in module 'actcookie.dll' Read of address 00000009.
I get this in my login (along with one about bhomonitor.dll), but after a couple of them they stop. Again, in my simplistic understanding, I don't know if this is useful or just extraneous. At any rate, I ran the fix of jnbara.exe from her login, rebooted, and I don't see it in the repeat log. Here it is:

I like the looks of that log much better. :tazz:
You know that this means since it was on her profile that it's not your fault. :) :)

There's still a few things we should fix.
Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Delete these folders, if still present:

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3
C:\Program Files\Cas

Reboot and post a hijackthis log from each user on the computer and we'll see if there's anything left. Let me know how things are running for you now.

Sam,
surf side kick and cas were no where to be found. THere was a CasStub folder in c:programfiles, but I left it there.
My son's login seems to work fine (Alex, age 5- mostly Sesame street.com and noggin.com games. :tazz:
Mine has a few popup alerts like my wife's as I mentioned before, but then stops and seems pretty usable. :)
Hers still has the actcookie.dll alert every 3-5 seconds. :)
Here are our hijackthis logs from respective users in the above order:
Thanks,
Greg

From son's login (Alex, age 5)

From the first and third logs fix these lines with Hijackthis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmkah.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmkah.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hclean32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hclean32.exe

Delete these files if present:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmkah.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hclean32.exe

Please run Panda Online Virus Scan
  • Make sure it is set to clean automatically.
  • There may be files that this scan will not remove.
  • Please include that information in your next post.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log(from your wife's profile only) and the info from your virus scan.

Sam,
Seems to be running well...only a couple of popup warnings when I first logon as before, but they stop when I close them and it seems to run normally. :tazz:

So assuming I'm clean, should I run a windows service pack update at this point?
In order to keep my machine clean, what do you recommend I run as background security (I have McAfee)?
Which of the 15 or so downloads that you've directed me to in the last month should I run periodically to interrogate my system(s), and how often?
Did my laptop get infected (following is a hijackthis log from the laptop)?
Do you get paid by geeks to go...i.e. how would a paypal donation get distributed?
Thanks again,
Greg :)

I notice just one program on your laptop that I recommend removing. But you can do so easily through Add/Remove Programs. Uninstall any of these programs that are listed.

My Search Bar
MyWay Speed Bar
My Web Search Bar
Fun Web Products Easy Installer

The errors you are getting at startup are coming from Spyware Doctor. I would uninstall it also and then reinstall it. That should eliminate the errors.

Of all the tools and programs that we used during this process I recommend keeping Ewido. Everything else you can delete.

I volunteer my time here at Geeks to Go, but if you follow the link in the signature of my posts you can make a donation(via Paypal) that will come directly to me.

Mcafee is good as long as you keep it updated. Here are some other recommendations for you to keep from getting infected again.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
