:tazz: also wanted to ask ... if there was something specific I need to do, do completely un-install the printer, as it's not in my add remove programs, and it's not under the printer n fax tab. I did however do a search under lexmark, and a folder appeared which I deleted. So was it gone ?? Sorry, dont mean to be a pain in the Rear.

Hi Christa,

Regarding the removal of Norton, as you pointed out it may not have been removed completely.

Please visit this page and check out modalities of removing it completely -

Hi Christa,

I missed your post on uninstalling the printer.

Click on Start ---> Settings ---> Printer and Faxes. There will be a lit of printers installed on your PC. Delete the one that you want to uninstall.

For installing your Lexmark printer - use the installation file from here -

So I'm doing this and first part is all as it should be I assume, but under the dependencies should it say remote procedure call (RPC) in that box ? Just wondering.
But then I get to step 4, and I dont have a folder system32. ...!!!???
Did a search of all files n folders and the only thing is C:windows/I386- under there is a system 32 folder, but no info in it that pertains to this situation.
Something else going wrong with my pc...????

Hi Christa,

System32 is a "hidden" folder.

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
  • Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Hi Christa,

This is getting more interesting.

Is the printer connected to port LPT1 ??? LPT1 is the port with a big pin size and a lot of pins in it. Please check that.

Right click on My Computer (on your desktop) and then click on Properties ----> Hardware Tab. Click on Device Manager.

Click on the + sign next to Ports (COM & LPT). Right click on Printer Port (LPT1) and then click on properties.

1. Is the device working properly ??

2. Click on Driver Tab. Please give me the details of the driver as listed on that page.

3. Click on Details Tab. In the drop down menu, choose the option Device Instace Id. Give me details of the text in the box below.

My printer has a usb plug not the big pin type plug. Anyway I checked the device manager again, no errors. Printer port LPT1 - Driver Details C:\Windoes\System32\DRIVERS\parport.sys

I've also tried uninstalling the USB controllers, they were found again installed but still no printer shows up as connected. I'm so confused. Thanks again tampabelle.

This is the only cable that the printer has. I have like 8 or so usb ports, to the best of my knowledge most of the photo printers are connected this way. As I stated in a earlier post I have no idea why it stopped working, I've plugged my camera in and other usb items and they all work n configured fine.

Now when I put the cd in some kind of update came on the screen for the lexmark printer So I thought what the heck clicked on it, something ran and ta-da the printer is now showing up under the printer and faxes. Yet when I click to print I get this Communication not available, the printer cannot communicate with the computer. Try these solutions roboot, etc.... I did and still get the error. :tazz:

Hi Christa,

Please check and let me know what the port setting for the printer is -

1. Go to Start, Settings, Printers (Windows XP: go to Start, Control Panel, Printers and Faxes).
2. Right click on the Lexmark Printer and click on Properties.
3. If the port is not set to Usb00x Virtual Printer Port, then do so.
4. Click Finish.

Please also check on this and let me know about it -

Right click on My Computer on your desktop and then click on Properties ---> Hardware Tab and Device Manager.

There will be an item - Universal Serial Bus Controllers. For each item on it, right on it and then click on Properties ---> Details tab. Choose the drop down option of - Device Instance Id. Copy the different IDs into a log file.

Post the log file here
