The file

O20 - Winlogon Notify: avpx32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\avpx32.dll

Boot to safe mode (F8 on reboot) and run HSFix after it runs, Reboot straight Back to safe mode and run it again. Do not post the logs in between reboots this will hinder the fix.
Once you have done the above Run hijackthis and place a check beside
O20 - Winlogon Notify: avpx32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\avpx32.dll
then close all windows and click fix checked.
Next reboot back to normal windows and post a new hijackthis log.

When I open HSFix in safe mode I open it by heading through start menu/ my comp/ documents and settings/shane/desktop/HSFix. I do this because the larger icons on safe mode are too large too all fit on my screen ( HSFix is not there to click ) and I am too idiotic to know what else to do. Is this method also hurting the fix maybe?

Ok here we go sorry about the wait this is a new infection.

1. Click here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit.
and Click here to download the newest version of HSfix
2. Boot into safemode to do this keep tapping F8 on your keyboard while your PC is starting up you will get a menu select safemode.

3. Double-click on Killbox.exe to run Killbox. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, check both the end explorer shell while killing file and the Unregister *.dll before deleting checkboxes, then click the red button with the white X on it after each. Keep track of any files it tells you either could not be found or could not be deleted, as you'll need those later:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\avpx32.dll

For the files that it either couldn't find or couldn't delete, in the killbox again this time, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, check both the end explorer shell while killing file and the Unregister *.dll before deleting checkboxes, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

4. Run HSFix and keep the log you will need to post it after we are done.

5. While still in safemode open Hijackthis and click scan. Then tick and fix the following in Hijackthis with all windows closed except Hijackthis.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: avpx32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\avpx32.dll

6. Reboot back into normal mode and post the HSfix log and a new Hijackthis log.

Oh, no problem. I figured you had knocked off for the day so I went to bed myself.
I still have my hidden files shown, could this be helping me get reinfected?

Sorry, I could not use any of those programs. My browser does not support them apparently.
My system to be working ok except for those windows error messages.

I need a different scan I imagine?

What error messages are you getting? Before I say you are clean i'll wait about a week then we will see if you are still clean you also need to look at changing any passwords that you have used while on your PC while you were infected the infection you had logs passwords.

The error mesages I am getting are all variations on something like this :

Windows has encountered 47 critical errors.
you should go to blahblah.com to fix this ( regfix.com etc)

I have to wait until it pops up again ( it happens much less often now )
in order to post the exact message, but it varies.

I will put it in my next post. I get the impression that there is not much behind this message for my reaction to it seems to have no effect on it. My system is running relatively smoothly otherwise.

Here is one of the error messages:

Message from SYSTEM to ALERT on 7/18/2005 7:49:39 AM

STOP! WINDOWS REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION

windows has found 47 CRITICAL SYSTEM ERRORS

to fix the errors please do the following:
1.Download registry repair from :(ww etc ) ms-fix.com
2.Install registry repair
3.Run registry repair
4.Reboot your computer

FAILURE TO ACT NOW MAY LEAD TO DATA LOSS AND CORRUPTION!

All the messages are variations on this.

Surely my system can't be completely clean if I am still getting these messages?

Go to start, run type "services.msc" with out the quotes find the service.

Messenger service

Right click and stop it, make the start up type to disabled.

Then see if you are still getting them popups.

Cheers, that stopped 'em. ;)
Would I be correct in thinking that I have only succeeded in stopping the pop ups themselves though rather than the reasons behind them?

One pop up I am still getting, very occasionally, is:

R2
ea access violation.

My brother, who is much more computer literate than myself downloaded some sort of registry fixer. He said that he found 187 registry errors which he was unable to fix.
Would this be related to this other pop up I'm thinking.
The computer still makes some scary groaning noises sometimes but maybe its supposed to make them.

Actually, speaking of my brother, thus far I have been putting the blame squarely on him for these infections.
I am not much of a computer person and my use of the machine is pretty much limited to a few historical websites and a couple of games. My bro, and often his friends, use it for all sorts of things however. I'm not sure what most of the stuff they use do exactly but I know some of them are file sharing programs which I have heard can cause problems.
I have felt free therefore to heap abuse on him. :tazz:
I don't really know what I am talking about however ( as he constantly reminds me ), so I guess these things can be nobodies fault.
Am I being unfair on the poor guy?

I'll post another log file in a few days so you can see if I am clean or not.

Hmmn...it seems my computer has been reinfected.
Kapersky found a raft of trojan stuff with out me even running a scan.
They've just appeared all of a sudden, so I guess it must be nobodies fault then - could the lack of a firewall be making us an easy target?

They are all in c:\windows\system32

Under "results" opposite the infected objects:

Most of them say: is a Trojan Backdoor.Win32.Haxdoor.ds
Some say: moved to back up storage
Some say cannot be deleted, write protected.
And one - C:WINDOWS\SYTEM32\DIVX.DLL says:processing error

Here is a new HJT log:

The thing is, my hidden files are still umm..unhidden. I realise this could be a problem but I have been unable to work out how to hide them again. I know the option is in "folder options" but I can't find folder options :tazz:

Thanks for hanging in there with me ;)

Looks like you got infected with a virus.

1. Make sure your PC is set to show all hidden files and folders go here for instructions on how to do this. http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

2. Boot into safemode to do this keep tapping F8 on your keyboard while your PC is starting up you will get a menu select safemode.

3. While in safemode open Hijackthis and click scan. Then tick and fix the following in Hijackthis with all windows closed except Hijackthis.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Winmgr] C:\WINDOWS\mstask.exe

4. Delete the files. (if present)

C:\WINDOWS\mstask.exe

5.. Reboot and post a new Hijackthis log here in a reply.

Oh, one thing. I now have about a zillion anti virus programs on my comp.
I read in another thread that they can conflict with each other. Kapersky seems to make AVG redundant so I was going to uninstall AVG. Should I go ahead or am I misunderstanding the situation?
*edit* don't mind my dumb questions - the logs there anyhoo. :tazz:
