After reinstalling windows xp, stupid me, I surfed the internet without any anti-virus or whatsoever on my computer. So I got some nasty virus in the end.

First, there was the black wallpaper saying stuffs about spyware. It's been a permanent fixture on my desktop for days now.

Then, there was the blue screen with the message:

A fatal error in IE has ocurred at 0028:C00IIE36 in VXD VMM (01) + 00010E36
Error was caused by Trojan-spy.html.smitfraud.c
- System can not function in normal mode. Please check your security settings
- Scan your PC with any available antivirus/antispyware remover program to fix the problem

There was also the icon which tells me that my computer is infected.

Display properties only shows "screen saver" and "settings". Where did the others go?

Lastly, a window kept popping up talking about some fatal error and the fact that it had to close, yadda, yadda.

So I followed all the instructions here: http://www.geekstogo..._Log-t2852.html.

I downloaded CleanUp!, Ad-aware SE, CWShredder, Spybot S&D, Ewido Security Suite, Trend Housecall, AVG, TDS-3, Microsoft AntiSpyware, and Windows Update. I'm also using FireFox now.

Thanks to Ewido, which is now my new bestfriend, I was able to remove the virus. Blue screen is gone; error message doesn’t pop up anymore; I am no longer being automatically forwarded to a search website; the icon no longer notifies me that my pc is infected; I can now surf the internet with no hassle.

But I still can't remove the annoying black wallpaper. And I'm still waiting for the other tabs to return to my display panel.

I tried clicking on a picture and setting it as wallpaper. It’s been successful. Almost. The black wallpaper “shrunk”, but still takes up most of the screen; the reduced wallpaper just moved to the upper left corner of the screen.

So basically, I just want to get rid of the black wallpaper, restore all the tabs on my display panel, and make sure that my PC is clean so that I can finally download SP2.

Your help will be much appreciated.

Welcome shasha to Geeks to Go!

Please read these instructions carefully. You may want to print them. Copy the text to a Notepad file and save it to your desktop! We will need the file later.
Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download SmitRem
your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

***

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

***

Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
The program will prompt you to update click the OK button

The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files. On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed, close Ewido for now.

***

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, please download and install AdAware SE 1.06.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

***

Download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each

C:\WINDOWS\q17200562_disk.dll

For these file, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

***

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

***

Open HijackThis
Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O2 - BHO: VMHomepage Class - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFA} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp5B9D.tmp (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSGuard] C:\Program Files\PSGuard\PSGuard.exe

O20 - Winlogon Notify: style2 - C:\WINDOWS\q17200562_disk.dll (file missing)

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

***

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.
Post me the contents of the smitfiles.txt log as you post back.

***

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

***

Now open Ewido Security Suite:* Click on scanner
* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop
Reboot your machine and post back a new HJT log and the ewido.txt log file you saved by using Add Reply

***

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

***

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

i ran the on-line active scan yesterday and some viruses were detected. here's the 1st log:

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/antivirus-gold No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\screen.html
Adware:adware/psguard No disinfected C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\CHANTEUSE\APPLICATION DATA\PSGuard.com
Adware:adware/brilliantdigital No disinfected HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{48E59292-9880-11CF-9754-00AA00C00908}
Possible Virus. No disinfected C:\Program Files\TDS3\dcsres.exe
Virus:W32/Smitfraud.B Disinfected C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB883939-IE6SP1-20050428.125228$\wininet.dll
Spyware:Spyware/Smitfraud No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\screen.html

And then the 2nd log:

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/antivirus-gold No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\screen.html
Adware:adware/psguard No disinfected C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\CHANTEUSE\APPLICATION DATA\PSGuard.com
Adware:adware/brilliantdigital No disinfected HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{48E59292-9880-11CF-9754-00AA00C00908}
Possible Virus. No disinfected C:\Program Files\TDS3\dcsres.exe
Spyware:Spyware/Smitfraud No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\screen.html

i tried it again this morning just to make sure that there are no more viruses, but i couldn't. "Error on downloading Panda ActiveScanAn error has occurred downloading Panda ActiveScan. Please repeat the process. If the error occurs again, restart your system and try again." i can't figure out what the problem is as it worked just fine yesterday.

so i used Trend Housecall instead and it didn't detect any virus, although i don't have a log for that.

Hopefully you'll tell me on your next post that my PC is clean!!! ;)

P.S. yes, i'm in the philippines...where the "i love you virus" originated... if ever you've heard of that one before...bad, i know! :help:

I just wanted to make sure the IP adress did belong to you (and no redirect).

Let's clean out what Panda left behind.

Can you first try to rerun Smitrem in safe mode?

Then rerun Panda in normal mode and post me that log.

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each

C:\WINDOWS\screen.html
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\CHANTEUSE\APPLICATION DATA\PSGuard.com

For these file, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Copy the purple text to notepad
save it as: panda.reg
make sure type is set to 'all types'

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{48E59292-9880-11CF-9754-00AA00C00908}]

Close Notepad.
Double click panda.reg and grant permission to add it to the Registry. Wait for a message 'merge succesfull'.

I'll leave the TDS3 file, it contains the signatures of infections as a reference to find them. Panda detects them, but we don't want them gone.

Did you try to use firefox to do the panda scan? It need Internet Explorer to run.
Can you try again?

I followed all your instructions. Have tried to scan numerous times already, but I guess fricken' Panda doesn't like me. And yes, I was using IE. Is there no other alternative that is as good as our dear Panda?

Anyway, this is totally not related to the original topic, but can you also check my latest HJT log. I find it very difficult to connect to the Net lately [yes, dial-up!!! ;) ] due to computer not responding error something. I used to be able to connect in just one try; never had this prob before. And then, yesterday, while trying to connect, windows restarted by itself.

Error report:

BCCode : d1 BCP1 : FDAFCF90 BCP2 : 00000002 BCP3 : 00000000
BCP4 : F6463392 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 1_0 Product : 256_1

The following files will be included in this error report:

C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini072205-01.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\CHANTE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER1.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml

For some reason, I also temporarily removed TDS3. When I tried to install it again, it says "C:\Program Files\TDS3\radius.td3 An error occurred while trying to copy a file: The source file is corrupted." I still can't install it to this date.

I have a lot of patience, it's you who leads this.

Please log on with administrative rights.

Use the System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files on your computer:

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type sfc /scannow, and then click OK.

***

Please try to run this.
Please download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware for the Web Utility (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click the new icon on your desktop (tmas-web-scan.exe)
  • It will say "Loading TrendMicro definitions".
  • Once the definitions are loaded, the program will appear to close then re-open.
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • After it's done scanning, click "Scan Results"
  • Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now".
  • Click Exit.
Reboot your computer. In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log", please double-click that log and copy the entire contents and paste them here.

I've been reading on that minidump error. My guess it's a hardware related issue.

I have to check what we can do for you. I'll be back.

You have Anti Trojan Elite on your computer.

Did it remove any trojans?

As for TDS3, the TDS software line is discontinued, effective immediately. So you didn't do anything wrong there.

thanks to Illuka for helping out

I actually just "fix checked" anti-trojan elite using HJT. If my memory serves me right, I was never able to use it. It's the first anti-trojan I downloaded before discovering geesktogo [thank God! :tazz: ]. I think you have to pay first before you can use anti-trojan elite [not sure, maybe it was another software], but I remember getting annoyed with it as it just kept popping up on my screen. I even removed it using add/remove programs, but it won't go away. It only stopped after I used ewido methinks. So when I spotted it on my HJT log a while back, I immediately removed it.

Anyway, so is my PC clean now? I really want to download SP2.

Here's my latest HJT log. Kindly check if there's something weird on it:

Thanks for the compliment :tazz:
And good luck at 'hardware'

---------------

please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
