I posted this in the Windows 98 forum, am now reposting here as per instructions..

I'm trying to clean up a computer for my girlfriend's mother. She's got an older machine, a Pentium III, 256meg of ram, running Windows 98. WHole system was running slow as molasses, and LOADED with popups (even when a browser window wasn't open) which were all advertisements for "adult" sites and related junk. so I did a virus scan using Norton Antivirus, then ran Spybot S&D, AdAware, CWShredder and Spyware Blaster. I was able to find a lot of junk but even deep scans and reboots, the obscene popups are still there.

I have run the online virus scans, spyware scans, security checks, as instructed here. in addiition to the anti-spyware progs I mentioned above. Also the TDS software.

I'm kind of out of ideas at this point so here's a hijack this Log, recorded after I did all of the above:

1. Print out these instructions as you should not start Internet Explorer until they are completed.

2. Download Killbox from HERE and extract it to c:\killbox

3. Navigate to the c:\killbox directory and double-click on Killbox.exe

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open Notepad, and copy all of the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them all, then pressing CTRL + C:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\param32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\guninst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\popup_bl.dll
C:\sexicamz.exe
C:\WINDOWS\avztpvs.exe

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

After your computer reboots, go into this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\System32

Delete any icons you find in there. For example:

casino.ico
date.ico
games.ico
mobile.ico
network.ico
pharm.ico
pharm2.ico
scanner.ico
spam.ico
spyware.ico

5. Then download, install, and run CleanUp!

6. Run HijackThis and press the Scan button.

7. Put a checkmark next to the following entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Default_Search_URL = http://0-OL1OIZ-XOLX...2/ogsearch.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.newgenlook.info/ad/ad0202/

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {1FFED2CB-FC98-49f8-B3D0-678D03350F1E} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SystemTasks] C:\sexicamz.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [zixfc] C:\WINDOWS\avztpvs.exe

O16 - DPF: {11120607-1001-1111-1000-110199901123} - ms-its:mhtml:file://c:default.mht!http://www.realizeit...m::/dropper.exe

O18 - Filter: text/html - {DFAA31C8-A356-4313-9D95-5EDAB46C5070} - (no file)

8. Once those entries are checked, press the Fix button.

9. Exit HijackThis.

===============

Reboot your computer.

Post back a new log, report any problems and let me know how everything goes.

IMPORTANT! PLEASE do not restart your computer unless asked, restarting can reinfect your computer resulting in us starting the cleaning up process all over!
