WINFIXER STRIKES AGAIN!

When browsing the internet i have two things happening:
1. a dialoge box appears asking me to check my computer because it's running slowly or something. i click the x in the window and it takes me to the winfixer2005 webpage, which i close.
2. an explorer window appears that says: navigation failed, we could not process your request to find spyware remover, which of course i haven't been looking for

I went through the five steps as per your website,
1.cleanup
2.adware
3.spybot
4.ewido

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from here.

Also download KillBox by Option^Explicit from here.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of mssys.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the mssys.dll's under winlogon click ok.

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of mssys.dll then click the kill button. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you have done that click ok again.

Next run HijackThis and place a check beside each of the following.

Save it as vundo.reg and in the save as type box choose all files.

Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

I did what you said and when I checked out the logfile, i still saw the files i killed still existed, so figuring i did it wrong, i did it again, rereading the instructions many times to make sure i followed it properly. the same result. not fixed i believe. here's the logfile:

Please download FxVundoB and save it on your desktop.
Reboot the PC in Safe Mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key whent he PC is starting up).
# Double-click the FxVundoB.exe file to start the removal tool.
# Click Start to begin the process, and then allow the tool to run.
# Restart the computer.
# Run the removal tool again to ensure that the system is clean.
Save the log file it generates

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.

Please visit Panda and do an online scan. Save the scan report.

Run Hijack This and post a fresh HJT log along with Panda scan report along with Vundo log file.

In case you still have the same problem, lets try this fix -


Step 1
Download fixvundo.reg

I presume that you still have the files you downloaded earlier. In case you have deleted then please download them again.


Step 2
Please reboot the PC in Safe Mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when the PC is starting up).

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of mssys.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the mssys.dll under winlogon click ok.

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of mssys.dll then click the kill button. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

If you see any .ini or ,bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well

Once you have done that click ok again.

Step 3

Next run HijackThis and place a check beside each of the following.

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {9E69A5DE-24D3-4D3B-8117-5B60439EBFC2} - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\mssys.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mssys - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\mssys.dll

Now click fix checked and close HijackThis.

Step 4
Now double-click on the vundo.reg file that you saved on your desktop earlier and allow it to merge with the registry.

Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the delete on reboot button.

Enter the following filepath and filename into the Full path of file to delete box

C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\mssys.dll

Click the red circle with the white x and allow your computer to reboot.

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log.

I've only been able to work on this sporadically since they decided to move my desk and my computer was reassigned to someone else. however I'm trying to help them now, and still need to find a solution because what I tried didn't work:

I downloaded the FxVundoB and ran it like you said. it, however, did not find anything, it gave me a message, "could not find vundoB", it did not give me an option to save any log file. i didn't have time to rerun this scan again. but i rebooted and then i scanned with panda, it found 3 things. i also did a hijackthis scan and it again found the malicious mssys.dll. i saved both log files, but then it dissappeared off my desktop when i logged out and logged in again (i was logged in elsewhere else also... oops!).

then i went to the second of your most recent posts and did the fixvundo.reg thing, with process explorer and killbox, just like you said.
i got a strange message when i tried to kill the c:\windows\appatch\mssys.dll, a pop up box appeared and said "RendingFileRenameOperations Reg. data has been removed by external Process!"
which i don't remember happening when i did this step the first time!!!

i ran hijackthis again and found the same suspicious mssys.dll. again, that logfile went missing when i logged out and logged in again.

i can do all these steps again, if you want when everybody's out of the office, to get the log files but i'm not sure if that's going to produce any different results.
