Having trouble with apropos, lzio, and possibly other processes which reload subsequent to cleanup efforts (ZoneAlarm Pro keeps catching oddly named *.tmp files trying to log on). Your help is very much appreciated!

I do see a few files that look like they are most likely virus files, but I don't know for sure what viruses they would be try this first.

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

Sorry, I hit the wrong Reply button. I did as you said and ran the online virus scan and trojan scan. I also repeated my other scans and rebooted the computer (reg restore is off). The aproposmedia hasn't shown up, but something keeps trying to add itself to my registery and temp files with alphanumeric names (e.g., i49.tmp) keep showing up in my temp directory and trying to access the internet. Perhaps this is part of aproposmedia's process. Anyway here is my most recent Hijaal This log. I 'm glad that you're here to help. Thanks a lot. jmv

I am checking your log now, try this in the meantime.
Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

First go to "control Panel" and go to "add/remove programs" uninstall any or all of these:
ShopSafe
Any toolbar/searchbar except google.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

O2 - BHO: ShopSafe Browser Helper Object - {333F6B96-3992-4D58-A499-145A10FE48C3} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\BhoSSafe.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ShopSafe] C:\Program Files\ShopSafe\ShopSafe.exe /dontopenmycards
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hpsysconf1] C:\WINDOWS\System32\crkfdeb.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [r8sO3FT] admispl.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [az3ERPfmW] hotgsnap.exe
O9 - Extra button: ATI TV - {44226DFF-747E-4edc-B30C-78752E50CD0C} - C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\TV\EXPLBAR.DLL
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Please reboot into safe mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?.
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\BhoSSafe.dll
C:\Program Files\ShopSafe
hotgsnap.exe run a search for this. It might be in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32. Delete it.
admispl.exe Same with this one.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\crkfdeb.exe
C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\TV

reboot normally and go to this link with Internet Explorer:
http://security.nort...id=ie&venid=sym

This scan will not fix anything, but it will tell what files are infected and with what viruses. Please copy and paste the results back here along with a new hijack this log.

Shopsafe is a program from my credit card company (MBNA). It provides me with temporary credit card numbers, for which I can set the maximum amounts. Is there a history of problems with this program or does it look like a similar program? I just need to know whether it is indeed necessary to delete it and loose its capabilities.

Thanks,
jmv

It is not completely necessary to remove, I'd advise not letting it startup by itself. Make sure it starts only when you tell it to. Here's a couple links to look at with a little info.

http://www.2-files.c...me/shopsafe-exe
http://www.2-spyware...y-shopsafe.html

Whatever you choose to do, remove it or keep it let me know and show a fresh log so we can make you're clean. <_<

Do not remove these entries and files if you should keep it.

Hmmm, maybe I should have let you know that this PC's multimedia includes an ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 7500 board (it has television). Some of the applications and drivers for it are probably in the "C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\TV" directory. So, if I need to delete that directory, what should I do about restoring the capabilities?

In the mean time I'll be tossing that other stuff into the recycle bin.

Thanks, jmv

Oops, sorry, I had that file in the tv folder mixed up with this one here at these links.

http://www.spyany.co...xplbar_dll.html
http://www.pestpatro...ch-explorer.asp

The virus file is not found in the folder you have it in and it is also not in all caps. That's ok, just leave it. Also leave the hijack this entry referring to it.

Thank you for the help and info. I'm not sure whether everything is fixed yet, but am keeping an eye out. I would like to keep ShopSafe from running right away, but can't quite figure out how to do so. Typically I just shut it down after a boot up and start it when I need it. Back to my main problem. I couldn't find hotgsnap.exe via any of my searches (maybe one of the tools deleted it). My most recent HijaakThis log is below.

Thanks,

Well, I'm still having problems. When I rebooted my PC this morning Ad Aware found the following:

DEALHELPER
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»
obj[0]=Regkey : interface\{deba1742-2bec-4b78-a987-5837971193f7}
obj[1]=RegValue : interface\{deba1742-2bec-4b78-a987-5837971193f7} ""

SURFSIDEKICKBHO
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»
obj[2]=Regkey : S-1-5-21-1004336348-1078081533-682003330-1004\software\surfsidekick2

MYDAILYHOROSCOPE
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»
obj[10]=File : C:\WINDOWS\system32\setup_silent_25040.exe

I've allowed Ad Aware to fix the problems that it found. Later when glb1a2b.exe showed up in my \Local Settings\Temp directory. I read one of your threads about that file and went searching for wininit.ini. I found one in c:\windows that contained:

[Rename]
NUL=C:\WINDOWS\system32\bdl64177.exe

Somehow my Outlook email view settings have gotten screwed up so that checking the auto-preview option turns it off and unchecking it turns it on. Thus an autopreiview of some spam may have stuck me with glb1a2b.exe. But I've no idea how the settings got messed up. I turned email autopreview off, deleted glb1a2b.exe, and intend to delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\bdl64177.exe and c:\windows\wininit.ini, but before I take any action on those two I wanted to send you this info and a copy of my current Hijaak This log (below).

Thanks,
jmv
